A good veterinarian/vaccinations, flea preventative, heart worm preventative, microchip, a crate with clean, soft bedding, a good groomer and a reliable pet sitter for when you take a vacation. The book, "The Dog Whisperer"

A good, dry dog food with all the nutrients and vitamins he/she will need to thrive, proper-sized food and water bowls, a place to sleep/escape/rest safely unmolested, a human who will love, care and provide for him/her for the rest of his/her life. His/her own clean blanket to sleep on. Access to a competent, compassionate vet. Safe, sane toys to chew on. Good luck.

Aside from food and water, they need attention! Walk him everyday, get him chew bones, treats (my gf's dogs eat carrots, zucchini's etc.) DO NOT give him chocolate!! It will kill him!

if its long-haired, a brush. it most likely needs dog shampoo, of course, food and water, maybe some toys, treats, and if it stays outside, it needs something to keep it from the rain and heat.
