Do your homework. Contact your local animal control or veterinarian for places to get info on pets. Definately search online as well. Go to a search engine like yahoo, google, dogpile, ect. and ask that question. Remember to think about your lifestyle and how this pet will fit in. For example, I work full time, volunteer, am involved in my community and church, and have 2 work from home businesses. So I am a busy bee. We have a dog that is very need and wants attention, but never gets it. We ended up giving him to a friend. Remember pets are a lot like children and shouldn't be shoveled from home to home. They thrive on stability just like we do. Also think about whether a long hair or short hair pet would be best. Long haired animals are so cute and furry, but also require lots of bathing and brushing and care. If you consider an exotic animal make sure you know how to care for it and understand the background. I had an iguana once that was the sweetest thing you would ever meet. When it died we purchased another one and it was the meanest thing you would ever meet. Come to find out only about 1-5% of all iguanas have a sweet nature. So your odds of getting a mean one are more likely. You also need to consider where you live. If you live in an apartment complex then a big dog that is used to the outdoors would be miserable there. Below is a great source of articles on cats and dogs, even about how to choose which one. Also remember that you can save an animal by getting one from animal control and they can help you with the process. Also, I find that most of these animals are a lot healthier and live longer lives.

It depends on how much space you have, how much you are home and all that. If you are not home a lot, fish, or something low maintenance, if you are home a lot and have some room get a cat or dog, also need to take into account if you rent versus own your place because if you rent, landlords require deposits and usually have weight limits for dogs. You need to look at the long term too, will you be able to care for this pet for a long time? If this is a temporary situation maybe you should hold off until you can make a longer commitment. If you go to a pound, the 'right' pet usually chooses YOU. =) Good luck with your decision!! I wish you a long and happy relationship with whatever animal chooses you.

Think about how much you are willing to take care of. How often are you at home, how often do you go away on trips, can you afford the food, vet bills, any necessary grooming (some dogs require regular maintenance), time you have to pay attention to the animal. If you don't want all the responsibility and cost of a larger pet, something smaller may suit you, like a hamster, or guinea pigs, or just some fish.

They usually find me...lol. A stray dog came in our yard a couple days ago, have signs up all over the neighborhood, he's a great dog. I do think he was mistreated though.

Go to a pound or to a pet store like petsmart. They usually have pets there that they will take out of the cage for you. Usually, you know it's the right one when you bond with it right there on the spot.

If you are looking for a dog, i suggest going to www.dogbreedinfo.com. Its a site my friend recommended where you can take quizzes and they match you with a dog thats right for you. Also, theres tips on there about where to get a dog, what to feed them, etc. If your just looking for a pet in general, try going to www.2ndchance.info/choospet.htm. that just gives top ten rules about choosing a pet. Before you purchase a dog/cat, make sure you get it checked out by a vet to make sure it's healthy. I just got a shih tzu puppy. She is so sweet! If you like small, affectionate, lap dogs, they are perfect! Good luck! :)

Research all the different sorts of pets you are thinking of getting. Look through books, magazines, websites. You could also ask someone at a local animal shelter what sort of pet is appropriate for your lifestyle.

There is some websites... mainly for dogs that ask you like how much grooming you want to do, what size you want, how much excersise it will get. ect. And then it will give you a list of good dogs.
