It depends on the severity of their liver, how much scarring there is. They should not drink if they have any kind of liver damage what so ever.

Depends on the cause and extent of the damage.
If the cause can be stopped and I believe 1/3rd of the liver is still alive then a recovery can be made. If the cause is irreversable and liver damage continues to accrue then death is inevitable.
First steps to stop liver damage is to elimanate drinking and drugs. That includes over the counter drugs. Asperin and Tylonal are two of the worst things you can do to your liver. Any drug not essential to survival should be cut out unless your Doc approves it's use and even then be conservitive with it's usage. Too much iron in the blood is another danger. It's called Irish disease in slang and ranks third behind Hep C and drinking for causes of liver failure. If you are of Irish descent and have a family history of either Irish disease or liver cancer in young relitives get the iron in your blood checked. It usually manifests itself in the mid to late 30s and can kill you that soon.
Dieing from cerosis is not a pretty death. However symtoms can be misleading. I had an uncle told by more than one Doc he had less than a year to live who lived 20 years. Each time he saw a Doc they told him he was not going to live much longer. A patient of a Doc I knew really well came in with liver damage symtoms being perfectly healthy until that day, at least outwardly. Two weeks later he was dead. He worked until the day he was admited into the hospital doing construction work. He had extensive liver damage from drinking and possibly Hep C. Didn't much matter at that point as the liver was shot.
Many liver transplant patients survive for years on waiting lists. So many live for years after being told thier liver is shot. Life quality is changed reguardless. Even if they get a transplant life will never be the same assuming there is no rejection of the transplant it still means lots of drugs, worries about infections as the imune system is forever comprimised to fight rejection. Transplants buy time. They do not hold off the inevitable. Still time is precious enough to be worth it in most cases.
So to be honest there really is no way to tell for sure. You can go with averages but they mean little as there are so many exceptions. The liver is an amazing organ. The ONLY one that will completely regrow itself if you leave even half of it alive.

A lot depends on why the liver is damaged. Hepatitis pts can live a long time as long as they are not abusing their liver. Did you know you can have part of your liver cut off for donation and it grows back.

It depends upon the severity of damage to the liver. If left untreated, several months.

It all depends, is the person in end-stage liver disease or has it just recently been diagnosed. Does the person already have ascites or are they asymptomatic. It is hard to answer this question.
