One of my best friends just asked me out and I don't know how to say no without putting our friendship at risk. Any advice?

Trust me on this...

The best answer you can give him is an honest one. If you're not into him, tell him so.

If not, the friendship will be doomed. If you try to make excuses, he will resent you. If you lie, he will catch you, and feel even worse. If you avoid the issue, it will crush him even more because you'll be stringing him along.

Actually, your friendship might already be doomed, because it's really hard to be friends with a girl when you want to be more, and she doesn't.

You NEED to tell him the truth, and deal with the natural consequences. He'll probably say "ok" and then begin distancing himself from you...that is his choice. That is life.

Any other action by you would be cruel and very painful to him (and you). Don't be a coward...

if he really is your best friend, you can tell the truth... tell him honestly that you do not want to put your friendship at risk by going out and later realizing that you will not hitch off...
