I think 14 is a little to young for halter tops because they are too revealing for a young girl. You are the mom, you have the right to tell her no. I would make her wait to wear them until a few more years. You can't wear them in school anyways.

I think you should go shopping with her and make a decision on a shirt by shirt basis. This will help her know how to evaluate whether a shirt is too revealing on her own (if she wants to) when she's older. It'll also be a more fair way to approach the whole thing. Teenagers as a whole love forbidden fruit. Anything that's completely not allowed becomes so much more appealing. If you just put your foot down and say no way, she's more likely to borrow a shirt from her friend and change in the school bathrooms or something like that. The world's not black and white, so go out together and find that happy gray medium.

I wouldn't let her just yet! Even though they may be nice looking, I have no idea how the guys are around your area where you live. You don't want her sending the wrong message or any message for that matter, that she is open for service. Sorry to say, but If she were my daughter, which I have two (3 yrs and 1 yr) and I have 5 sisters two of which I did a lot of the raising with, and one just happens to be 14 yrs old now. From an outside point of view from where they live its an open invation for trouble. Yet I think it's an open invation anywhere you live. Maybe when she is older, like around 20 and out of the house. I wouldn't let my daughters where that stuff even if they where 30 and still living in my house. I don't care if they have the figure to wear it or not, if they are in my house they will dress nice and not like easy cheese! Sorry, but I may only be 25 but I am old fashion when it comes to dressing nice, my kids can grow up and be gothic, I don't care.... as long as they don't over do it, like painting their faces ghost white and big black circles around their eyes. But they have to be covered up, a little skin is fine, but when I see these girls out there now wearing these tops that are about 6 inches wide and thats it, I just can see them getting into trouble. Even when I see that girls are being called sluts in schools, and guys think its ok to try to get "something" from her. A lot pf people say " she asked for it" when someone thinks they are easy from the clothes they wear, as much as people say its wrong to jugde someone by what they wear, it's true thats all people do, and sorry to say but if some guy or girl sees another girl in a top that is 6 inches wide, enough to cover only their bust area, first thing that comes to mind is, "gees, she must be easy" ! I hope this helps you in any way!

I will have to print this out, so I can show my girls this when they get older, lol!!!!

I have to add.... after reading all the other answers..... looks like most of the ones that say yeah let her wear it, are GUYS!!!! That's a hint, if I ever saw one!!!

I don't let my teen wear them because you can't wear a bra with them and that is a bit obscene. I agree that 14 is too young to be letting it all hang out. She has plenty of options out there, rather than showing bare skin. Unfortunately, there really isn't a compromise when it comes to that. Maybe you can bribe her away from the halter tops with accessories--earrings, necklaces, purses--so she can learn how to enhance a wardrobe, instead of relying on naked skin.

When I was a teacher, girls used to wear them under their sweaters, even though halter tops were against the dress code. During passing periods and lunch, they would simply take the sweater off.

Good luck!

If she cant wear halter tops at 14 when can she? 50?? My daughter wears whatever she likes and has developed a good dress sense on her own. Seems like a bit of a trust issue here for you??

I think what you are really asking is...will my 14 year old daughter look slutty if she wears halter tops.... Frankly, I don't think that JUST because her back and shoulders show it will look to sexy. There are some very cute tops that still look UNslultty. Talk with her about your concerns, let her know that your main concern is her looking to "loose", then go with her and see if you can find something that you both feel comfortable with.

I think if she is able to handle herself and you think she is mature enough..YES. She will catch attention. She needs to choose where she wears this outfit to. I do not think it is everyday wear. There are special occasions for certain clothing. I would allow her to own a pair of halter tops but would explain to her that there is a place and time to wear these tops. She would not wear a prom dress to class right? Good sign , she is happy with her body not a bad thing.

When my generation was young, kids wore halter tops, remember (1970/80). ..
My concern would be how developed your daughter is. Does she have a huge rack that would call attention to itself in a halter top, or does she still look like a little girl? Don't let her sexualize herself if you can help it. Believe me, she has decades of being objectified ahead of her. I have a 15 year old, and I feel your pain.

I do know what you mean! My god some of the clothes these girls are wearing is crazy! Cant even find normal blue jeans anymore! They keep getting lower and lower and lower!!!! My son is 15 and he doesnt even like girls who dress that way. He likes girls who look pretty and classy and cute. He says to tell her that most teen age boys look for good girls who dress with class and maybe once she knows boys like that better she might change her mind!
