We can't say they don't exist because they DO exist, and they vary by language and culture. In the USA, curse words seem to revolve around sex and bodily functions. In French Canada, they revolve around religious objects.

I think their original purpose was to express pain or anger on such a primal level that coherant thought isn't immediately engaged. It's like a knee-jerk reaction. Unfortunately, most of us have chosen to use words that aren't very palateable.

As for cursing in regular speech... I think that is just people getting lazy and not bothering to think of the real words to express their feelings. It's too bad too, cuz it is much more effective to do so. Hey, which would be more offensive if you stopped to think about it - me calling a person a f**ker or a b**ch or me saying that a person is a complete waste of carbon matter.

If we didn't have the word "crap" then we would make the word "poop" a curse word. There is a time and place for everything. When your playing cards with the boys its funny , When its directed at a co worker its instigating. When its in public its rude. Its not the word , its the mentality.
