A private detective is almost the same as a regular detective, the difference being that a private detective is available for hire. Sherlock Holmes was a private detective, for instance.
They investigate just about anything; sometimes they are used to spy on people, other times they are hired by the police as mental muscle to solve cases when the police force is stretched thin and whatnot.

A PI (Private Investigator) is a guy who is like a detective. He is hired by a person or a party who is looking to find something out, like whether a guy is cheating on his wife or not. He sets to work, and then he finds evidence to support his final conclusion, and then he tells them what they need to know.

A private investigator, or PI, is a person who undertakes investigations, usually for a private citizen or some other entity not involved with a government or police organization. Private investigators were hired to search out evidence of adultery or other illegal conduct within marriage to establish grounds for a divorce.

Private detective means a detective that doesn't work for the police. They typically work for spouses that think they are being cheated on.

a private detective is not working for the Police....
it is a detective-for-hire....usually by common people....but not always...
they could be investigating any number of things......depends on what whoever is paying them wants to find out....
for example: people hire private detectives to follow a spouse they suspect of cheating...

They do many things, and can work for many people.
Basically they're free lance... they have an ad somehere, a potential client calls, and the PI either does it or doesn't do it.
They can locate people, find out if spouses are cheating, or do all sorts of cool things that detectives do on tv and in the movies. You never know!
