18 Years Old...the owner of this store seems to prefer us employees (we are all female ) to wear tight jean, or really short shorts, or mini's. He doesn't say that specifically, but it is understood, and encouraged...he also will not hire anyone who is not a cigarette smoker...that part is not a problem because I started smoking at sixteen. My mother does not like it, but she lives with is cuz that the way I am...Anyway..I recently updated my wardrobe to include a couple pairs of really tight fitting jeans and 3 pairs of really short shorts for the summer( they are extremely tight too).. The problem is my mother...she does not feel I should wear this kind of thing to work...if I don't I won't fit in with the girls..but she complains about me showing too much..what should I do..I really like my job...and although the boss does not say anything he seems to hire the types of girls who smoke and dress this way..so I am just fitting in ..is my mother wrong?

I agree with your mother. While I have two young boys (both toddlers) so I have no experience with teenage girls, I WAS a teenage girl once (many years ago :D) and I can tell you from that experience...women don't want their daughters to grow up and be trashy looking, or dress like they're about to go to work at their night job, down the street on the corner. Your mom probably wants you to look cultured, refined, and not treated as a sex object or ogled by dirty old men.

My suggestion to you would be to try to find a more professional job that gives you satisfaction (actually doing something good for someone) and possibly pays better. I'm not sure how much you make now, but I seriously doubt you could support yourself in your own apartment, paying bills on time, making ends meet, etc. on your hourly wage.

HOORAY FOR MOM!!!!!! Are you kidding??? This employer should be reported for encouraging or advocating smoking and for being a deviate . It sounds like you NEED to call attention to yourself and you have no self-esteem. If you were my daughter you would have quit that job long ago and I would have reported him( your boss) to the Labor Department and to the Vice Squad...You need counsel and guidance, my friend, because you are definitely not going in the right direction. I am sure you have some marketable qualities that you could use to get a better job with a much better (and healthier) environment. Listen to your Mom....she loves you!

no, your mother is not wrong. at your age you are probably just trying to fit in...and it seems where you work is adding to this....but is it important for you to remember to make your own style...if you truly like the way you look and feel comfortable in your tight jeans and shorts, then it is fine...if you are just dressing that way because the other girls do, then that is not fine....or if you are dressing to accomodate your boss...that is not fine, either....it is important to be your own person..

have you also thought that maybe the owner of this place gets off looking at the girls?? surely the way you dress does not affect the sales....

you shoulod listen to your mom. One thing fro sure your boss is a pervert be aware of that dress codes exixit in ost workplace, provacative clothing in teh work place could lead to harassment as well misconstrued ideas. Try to wear something that you feel comfortable in rather than wearing something that makes you too selfconscious

you should be able to dress appropiate for any job....if it is not required to wear tight fitting jeans or extremely short shorts then you are doing that by choice. What is right for you?

If you usually wear that kind of clothing anyway, then it shouldnt matter, as long as your boss doesnt advance on you, everything should be fine, but if he does, SUE HIM! and take his store. Then you can have all the cigs you want and hire whomever you want.

Your biggest problem here is that you started smoking at 16. Quit smoking and quit the job!
