a lot of people are afraid of what they don't understand...that's one reason why people steer away from the church. it's where believers join together to worship God. some people don't understand the "why" of things...when that happens...it results in fear. a lot of people fear the unknown.

Basically what Malissa said. Most people see the close-minded actions of the religious fanatics and the hate they preach, and decided that going to church is not for them. "You don't need to eat dirt to know it doesn't taste good."
Many people still seek spirituality, but they seek a more gentler approach and something that is more in tune with their own personal beliefs. That's why I personally chose Buddhism. It leads to personal enlightenment and cherishes compassion to others.

I would call it afraid, but many don't want to go because many chuches are too close minded and almost seem cultish.I guess some people might be "afraid" but I've never heard of any who say they are...Some people are just closest prayers. They don't need to go out in front of a group of people and admit their love for God out of fear they may be thrown in an eternal hell.

People aren't afraid of church. They are afraid of the lunatics inside of it.

the same reason people are afraid of big vicious dogs, and claw hammer weilding psychopaths. because all of the above are irational, and looking at their record in the past you are more likely to come of wosre than better in your dealings with them.

in short - self preservation

Christians fear their God...hence they believe this fear passes on to others. Atheists fear nothing.
Church is simply the mechanism used to contain the sheep.

Because they feel it will be boring, or worse, hateful and condemning.
