This question is really really vague. It reminds me of someone asking what cars are like, how much they cost, and if they are better.

You don't say *what* you want to compare them to, so it's hard to say if they will be better than that.

You can buy Red Wine from $2.00 and the sky is the limit for the upper end. It's not unusual for high end restaurants in big cities to have bottles over several thousand dollars in price.

You aren't really going to get a 'great' bottle for under $35-$50, but there are some very good bottles around $10 or $15. There are plenty of drinkable wines under that, but finding them can be difficult as there are so many bad ones as well.

Red Wine is many different types of wine. The biggest ones are:

Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Pinot Noir
Zinfandel
Shiraz/Syrah

You can then have blends of these, and there are numerous mixing grapes (Cab Franc, Malbec), and there are dozens of other varietals out there. But the ones above are the most readily available.

My favorite entry level wines are:

Six Prong Red
Cycles Gladiator Syrah
Amberhill Cabernet
Pepi Sangiovese
House Red
Chiaramonte

These are all pretty much under $15 and have great flavor without being too offensive in any one attribute.

Pinot Noir is tradtionally considered the most complex grape, and many wine people consider a good pinot their favorite wine. A really really good one, around $75, would be Archery Summit 2003 Arcus Estates.

Pinot is amazing because it blends with so many things - it truely is made to be drank with food.

I actually completely agree with churchmusicgirl about the Merlot. Merlot is a great place to start with inexpensive wines because it is so mellow. A $5-$10 Merlot is *usually* going to taste better than a $5-$10 Cab. It's a safer bet if you've never tried a certain wine label. I *always* tell people that inexpensive Merlot is far more palatable than cheap Cab on the whole.

For someone just getting into wine, your best bet will be to go to a tasting. Most are casual, so don't feel bad if you don't know anything - that's why they have them. Drink what you like and dump what you don't. Keep a journal of what you like & don't like and why. From there, the wine shop owner can help you pick out something to fit your tastes. Good luck to you. : )

Red Wine

A good red wine to start with is Carolina Red by Duplin Cellars in North Carolina. Costs about $8 for a 750 ml bottle. It's not rot-your-teeth-out sweet, but is sweeter rather than drier.
Also, try a dornfelder mild from Knobloch Estates in Germany. Again, not too sweet, but a good starter wine for beginners. Costs about $13 per bottle in this region.
I would begin with these wines then progress to pinot noir or beaujolais, then on to merlot, shiraz and finally cabernet. A nice malbec from South America could also be thrown into the list. Some are available for $6 and on up to $$!
Let us know how you progress!

There are so many red wines. If you are just starting to enjoy reds, you may want to start off with something lighter, like a beaujolais nuevo. This type of wine can be enjoyed with many dishes. If you like this wine, try merlot, shiraz and then cabernet savingnon and pinot noir. Some are much fuller bodied than others. A good $10 bottle is Rosemount Shiraz. Also a big fan of Marques Cabernet, which also ranges around $10. There's alot to know about wine, too much in fact. Just start trying new ones and see which you like best. I reccommend going to a tasting. Local wine vendors sometimes have these or look in your local newspaper.

Yikes... that's like asking someone what beer is like. I can offer some suggestions:

If you've never had red wine before, you might want to start with a mild one like merlot. I know, I know, a lot of wine snobs are going to roast me alive for that, but merlot is a very light red wine and can have fruity overtones and is easy on newbies. It also tends to be less expensive. I had a Cellar No8 merlot about a month ago and it was a very nice summer wine at under $10.

If you want to try something with a little more body but still light on the wallet, try Yellow Tail Shiraz. It's an Australian wine, medium-bodied, and still under $10.

Now, if you want to jump right in and try something really REALLY good, see if you can get ahold of a bottle of Zinfandel from Ridge Winery in California. (You probably aren't going to find this in the grocery store, but BevMo might carry it.) This is going to put you out $20-$35, but it is one of my favorites. Zin is a heavier wine and full of flavor.

Red wine is a little stronger than white or rosay but it is good. Price all depends on what kind you buy and where you live.
