What exactly happens to the fluid in your ear that causes vertigo? Does something happen that stops the tubes from flowing perfectly with gravity? I've had it almost all my life, because of some ear problems, and now a friend of mine has it. Doctor told her it was only going to last a couple of days, and it's been 2 weeks. I've heard of Meclizine, but does it work?

Vertigo is terrible and unfortunately for most people there is no cure. Vertigo can be cause by several things such as inner ear infections as a child, trauma to the ear or other diseases. Some people have vertigo with no direct cause at all. The spinning sensation cause by vertigo is related to the tiny hairs within the inner ear and irritation caused by fluid in the inner ear. The treatment for vertigo is determined by the cause. The most common treatment is meclizine, which is really Dramamine. It does work but it is not a cure and it can make you sleepy. I control mine by using antihistamines with a decongestant to clear fluid from my head and Dramamine. There is a good article at the mayo clinic http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dizziness/DS00435/DSECTION=1

I have vertigo, caused by the middle ear and the associated tubes. The meclizine basically treats the motion sickness associated with the dizziness, but there is a warning label on the prescription that says "May cause Dizziness". Doesn't make any sense.

The doctor is treating me for a middle ear infection with antibiotics . The dizziness comes and goes, but we're still working on it.
