I'm sorry, but I think this is kind of a stupid question. No offense meant here either! I mean, obviously if someone does NOT believe in an afterlife of any kind, then the loss of a loved one means you will never see them again, and also their rare and precious existence has passed from the world for all eternity. On the other hand if you believe in a god of some kind, and therefore an afterlife, you grieve for your loss, but believe and hope you will see the person again someday in the great beyond. But either way I am sure the grief is the same...you miss the person, you are sad the world has lost them, etc etc.

Actually, I would think religious folk would have LESS to be sad about...so why not ask them???

I am just amazed how non-atheists know what atheists feel. You guys amaze me.. where do you get this knowledge from if you're not an atheist?

I lost my mom a year ago. What I felt was grief for the woman who gave birth to me, raised me and helped me along the way. She was a good hearted, kind woman, good wife and mother. Never cheated anyone and worked all her life.
Her life is over. We all die eventually. What matters is not the grief deep down, but the lessons I learnt from this person and the good things I can pass on to my son.

Do you think that I should feel anything else because I'm an atheist?

Grief is the personal expression of a percieved loss-selfish at it's base-but understandable and maybe a nessessary step in getting over loss and allowing life to go on;When you have lost someone close to you the ache may not go away or at least ease, without the exercising of that grief;God or no God-love is truth and therefore eternal.ktf.x

I'd flip that one right around. The grief of an atheist makes perfect sense. The grief of a Christian makes no sense whatsoever, unless you believe grandma went to hell. Why do you people cry when someone attains eternal happiness? (Hint: because you don't really believe your own nonsense)

Grieving is a psychological process which helps human beings come to terms with the fact that someone who was part of their life is now no longer a part. Death isn't the only thing that can cause grief.
