Totally untrue - before the invention of razors the shaving process was completed entirely by trained gnawing hamsters who chewed the beard to the required length in return for a small bowl of sunflower seeds.
Occasionally gerbils were used but they were not as able to grasp the grading system for beards / hair so results were unpredictable.
