I do not want to live in a bad part of town

Stay along the ocean, milder temperatures and much cleaner air. Malibu, Pacific Palisades, parts of Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes. Redondo Beach if you are careful, it has pockets that are marginal. Or parts of Venice Beach are not bad now if you want a younger/hipper more artsy crowd.

And of course Bel Air and Beverly Hills if you can put up with the pretentious lifestyle, or old Pasadena and San Marino if you are willing to live in brown air and run air conditioning all the time. Hollywood Hills can be fun and interesting if you are careful about building inspections, some of the older homes up in there have fascinating histories but some are pretty run down and need lots of work. Avoid central or east LA or the San Fernando Valley at all costs.

My all-around pick would be Manhattan Beach. Lovely housing, nice small community feel, plenty of restaurants, art galleries and retail, beautiful beach with very limited parking so it's mostly locals (LA area beaches can get totally overrun with people trying to escape from central/east LA and the valleys on the weekends), pretty good fast freeway access for a more reasonable commute into downtown or century city. Also, it is 15 minutes from LAX if you travel a lot, but completely out of the flight/noise path.

The San Fernando Valley is very nice. Please don't listen to West Side snobs on that. They're like the people who insist Manhattan is the only place worth living.
Don't get me wrong. The beach communities are awesome, but very pricey.
Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Toluca Lake, Calabasas...all very nice communities in the SF Valley, and you'll probably end up saving yourself a few bucks.

Go to Pasadena, asuza, Alta dena, Burbank, Glendale, Santa Monica. but L.A. city the I agree Los felis is good or silverlake(closer to Hollywood). But those are also the most expensive. My neighborhood in East LA is nice. but probably not you taste
