Christians have baptism and christening. God parents are nominated during these ceremonies. This is to ensure the child or whoever has a responsible adult to watch their spirit life in case the parent dies or is otherwise incompacitated.

It supposed to keep family or community unity - but in today's world it's becoming more just an antiquated nomination.

Sherry K has it correct.
God parents were a way of ensuring the spiritual and physical well-being of children in an age when life-expectancy was low and there was little in the way of state aid for orphans.
They are still valid provided they take the role as more than just a part of the scenery at a baptism. They can still remind and aid parents in the spiritual development of a child, but the parents must select carefully if this is to be so.

Every person on this earth is a child of God. He has sent you hear to test you and see if you have learned anything from him. The biggest part of the test is to see if you can rely and trust yourself to do right. So if you get drunk, have lots of open sex relationships, do drugs, or are not baptized by those holding the proper authority than you need to recheck the child of God hand book. It is called the Book of Mormon and the Bible. Then you will know that he will be preparing a home fore you with Him.

Can Christians have Godly parents? Is that you question? We have our Heavenly Father - God--- and we are the Family of God---the church. "The Church" is not a building or a huge corporation like the Vatican. The Church is the body of Christ, the Body of Believers.

Mine do, as do my grandchildren. Godparents accept the responsibility to raise the child in a Christian atmosphere should something happen to the biological parents.
