I think it makes sense. Usually religious people are following another man's teachings because they haven't (couldn't) come up with their own theories and ideas. It also makes sense as the "bible belt" of America is less educated than the coasts.
I wonder if one cause of this is because as a rule less educated people have to work harder to survive and have less time to read, think, philosophize? Plus if life is more of a struggle for you, maybe you would be more likely to turn to an outside source for your strength. Just a thought...

I don't know what I think about that "statement"
Religious can mean more things than just Christianity. I know lots of people who are Christians (aka religious), that are very very smart.
My husband is a minister, and he has 2 masters degrees. He is a counselor, a minister, a dad, a husband, a son, and a sales rep full time with 3M. Not only does he lead a congregation (and we live in the parsonage next to the Church) but he also has a full time sales rep job and is VERY successful at it. Last year, he was a top rep and his company took us on a 7 day cruise to Mexico, keys, and cayman islands. Takes brains to win something like that.
I, on the other hand, being a preachers wife....am a christian (aka religious), and I have an education as well. I went on to college studying office administration and also have a degree in cosmetology. I don't have a masters degree, but I am not lowered in my IQ range. I actually have a quite impressive IQ.
My family is/was religious and I have some pretty darn smart family members.
The pastor at my previous church was VERY intelligent, as was the congregation.
I don't know about other religions (Buddhism, Muslims etc) but I do know that 99% of the Christians that I know or have known in my life were pretty darn smart.

This is sheer nonsense. In high school, I came to believe in God. About two years later, I took the SAT and got a 740 on the verbal. After a few years, I took the GRE and my verbal score was 40 points higher than the SAT - on a harder test.
And guess what made the difference? In the intervening time, I had begun to study the Bible seriously, and quite bluntly, even my agnostic scientist father has to admit that that was what really taught me how (not necessarily what) to think.
That isn't the sort of results you'd expect if being religious lowers your IQ....

1Cor 1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
1 Cor 1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise ...
Obviously I cannot produce the kind of evidence that an atheist would accept because:
1 Cor 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
However, I am patient and will not give up proclaiming the love of God in Jesus. I can wait for my vindication, of which I am certain.

Sorry, but I don't think so. I do agree that there are alot more people who are less religious due to the college indoctrination programs. However, those who have more open minds can look at the data that the colleges are proposing and evaluate for themselves based on their worldview through their religion. I consider that a good sign of intelligence, that they are able to think for themselves.
BTW, I am a creationist and have an IQ over 140.

1. You may need to re-read the article that you site and check out a few others. Also try more looking at more recent studies.
2. You may also want to get a better understanding of correlation and causation. Sometimes folks try to use numbers to make statements of fact that even a credible scientist is not willing to make. (suggestion: take a statistic or research methods class this may help you avoid being so easily persuaded by numbers)

All human beings share the same worth regardless of IQ or common sense. Some of the smartest people I have ever met didn't have the sense to come in out of the rain. I have met many people with high IQ's atheist and theist. You however are apparently not one of them.

I don't think there is any matter to report you since you are just presenting your view point (may be pre-juidiced but that's alright) and its reasonably fair to seek help from others to understand this in bit more elaborate manner. Let me address this following way:
a) One of the most important aspect of this correlation is separation between religion and people who follow the religion same as separation between science of medicine and a doctor. Not every doctor is good or qualified or sufficiently skilled. Just like how set of non-skilled doctors existing in this world doesn't mean that medicinal science is ineffective, in similar fashion, any state of sampling for people who follow religion impact or imply anything about religion itself to large extent.
b) If your direction is that by following religious practices one will loose IQ power, there are certainly no correlation like that. In fact, I can certainly vouch from my religion that lot of truly religious intellectuals have much much higher IQ than average people because lot of spritual practices in religion if done correctly lead to opening up of untapped potential of mind/brain.
c) I guess it is important to distinguish between intellect and intelligence. IQ is very focused on intelligence. A person with high IQ doesn't necessarily mean that person has a great personality. In today's world it is singnificantly proven that other dimensions like EQ (emotional Q) etc make up lot more important equation to be successful and happy in this world. So even by measure, there is no point harping on IQ focus. Its old phenomenon of gone by era.

Prove it's a fact, then we'll talk. Until then, truly intelligent folks (religious and non-religious) realize the "sources" in your Yahoo web search are invalid as proof.
Your post is as offensive as other supposed "IQ proof studies" in the past. Consider the "finding" many years ago that blacks are less intelligent as whites. Clearly, this was used as yet another reason for racial discrimination.
I find it incredibly sad (and shocking) that a supposed "black man" would fail to understand he's fallen for this same type of lie.
p.s. -- I reported you again.

THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT RELIGION FIXES WHAT IS TO BE KNOWN AND WHAT IS TO BE DENIED... THIS CAUSES IN TURN A CLOSED MINDED SOCIETY THAT CANNOT EVOLVE INTO A MORE INTELLIGENT GROUP... THE MERE FACT THAT THERE IS BLIND FAITH IN SOMETHING SHOWS THAT INTELLIGENCE IS NOT PRESENT AS THE FIRST SIGN OF INTELLIGENCE IS CURIOSITY... ONCE CURIOSITY IS FULFILLED WITH A PARTIAL ANSWER YOU LET THE PERSON BELIEVE THAT IT IS RIGHT AND YOU PREVENT THIS PERSON FROM EXPLORING OTHER RELATED SUBJECTS AS THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS THE SAME --------> GOD DID IT.... THIS MAKES REALITY SEEM CONFUSING AND THEREFORE ALL EXPLANATIONS ARE EASY... A NORMAL PERSON WILL BE ABLE TO EXPLORE OTHER OPTIONS WHICH WILL ENRICH KNOWLEDGE NOT ONLY ON THE SUBJECT ASKED BUT ON OTHER ASPECTS THAT RELATE TO THIS... THIS IS WHY PERSONS WITH DEEP RELIGIOUS BELIEF ARE LESS INTELLIGENT THAN REGULAR MEMEBERS OF SOCIETY...

You are funny. There was a belief in this nation at one time that individuals of color (keeping the language accurate) had lower intelligence also. Sounds to me that the thesis was based on a flawed premise and that the results were determined using individuals who were in low socio-economic groups considered to be "hillbillies" from Appalachia. Their education may be suspect but their love of nation and God is complete. Include me in that varied sample. My university won't mind. As a matter of fact, it will rejoice and use it in the next marketing blitz aimed at America's young people.
Thanks for the laugh. I needed it.
