Nothing, except the latter is more used in the UK than in the US. Also, the former is also a type of donkey while the latter is just a backside (or a stupid person).

British people say a,rse with an emphasis on the second letter to mean bottom and American people say a,ss with emphasis on the first letter to mean bottom. Both are also used as swear words in each country.

In Britain saying a,rse is considered more profane than saying a,ss.

I think everyone hit it on the head with the UK / USA thing, but in the UK, I think a,ss is a bit more polite than a,rse! Maybe thats just my opinion!

The first one can refer to a donkey, or our bottoms, or it may be used as an insult. The second term refers to our bottoms. I think a,rse is more polite, if thats possible.
