they keep the actual recipe and the exact 23 flavors a secret. however, here's a neat fact: you know those old pharmacies that had a soda shop in the pharmacy? well the pharmacist that worked there loved the smell of all the soda flavors in the air and decided he wanted a soda beverage that tasted like all those flavors put together. and then he created dr.pepper!

If you mix a Amaretto with cola, you get an alcoholic drink that tasts remarkably like Dr Pepper. Of course, cola ingredients are as secret as Dr Peppers, but amaretto is made from almonds. So my guess is that these nuts define the taste.

COPIED:What's in it? The Dr Pepper company denies cherry and kola flavorings. They also deny the other rumors that Dr Pepper now or ever contained prunes, black pepper, chili pepper, bell pepper, peppermint, or prune juice. According to William Poundstone in his book Big Secrets, "the formula contains 23 ingredients and is locked in two bank vaults. Four people know it. The only surprise ingredient on the label ingredient panel is lactic acid. That is what gives sour milk its bite. If you hold some Dr Pepper in your mouth a few minutes before swallowing, there is a slight yogurt like note." He goes on to say that a query to the Dr Pepper company vice president confirmed that synthetic vanillin is an ingredient.
JUST A NOTE:Doesn't tell you what fruit, but thought you might find it interesting.COPIED: Called Red Fusion, Dr Pepper said the soda will be available in stores, vending machines and soda fountains in mid-July.
Red Fusion will mix the basic flavor profile of Dr Pepper with a variety of fruit flavors and will initially be available in 12-packs of 12-ounce cans, 2-liter bottles and 20-ounce single-serve bottles.
Dr Pepper's announcement comes on the heels of PepsiCo Inc.'s news earlier this week that it will sell berry-flavored Pepsi Blue in August.
Consumers have drifted toward cola alternatives in recent years, analysts have said, prompting the beverage makers to come up with innovative ideas to keep drawing customers.
"They're going to have to continue to find new ways to keep consumers drinking something with their label on it," said Crit Thomas, director of growth equity for National City Investment Management.
Dr Pepper said it began research on Red Fusion in September 2001, and said the flavor was the top choice of a diverse consumer audience.
"We made absolutely certain the product met consumers' expectations and desires," said Cindi Clark, Dr Pepper's senior vice president of marketing.
Some analysts noted Dr Pepper's entry is healthy for competition.
"I think what both companies are doing is very healthy. It's all about noise and creating excitement around brands," said Jeff Kanter, an analyst with Prudential Securities.
Dr Pepper, as well Seven-Up, both are owned by Cadbury Schweppes PLC (CSG: up $0.50 to $30.79, Research, Estimates) , the British soft drink and candy maker, and the No. 3 beverage maker behind Coke and Pepsi.

the new ad campaign mentions the 23 flavors of Dr. Pepper which means isolating one fruit based on taste would be pretty difficult. I've always associated it with a cherry flavor, though, as it reminds me of cherry colas. yuck.

It's a combination of 23 natural and artificial flavors but the combination is kept a secret. Type in Dr. Pepper on any search engine and you can see people's guesses on what it contains.

I think they have a special recipe like Coke does.
Judging from the number of responses here, nobody really knows.for sure.
Here's the results of a yahoo search to find the flavor.

I think Dr. Pepper is something you either like or not....there doesn't seem to be anything inbetween. I really like it, but a lot of my friends think it tastes like medicine and avoid it like the plague.

It was originally developed by a pharmasist in San Antonio, Texas. He wanted to capture the flavours of the pharmacy. It tastes about as fruity as coke so who knows what's in it!
