If you are moving in as a roommate with someone who is on an existing lease, insist on talking with the roommate who just moved OUT and on seeing the lease.

Or you can go through one of the rental agencies, and they will do some of that for you... you still have to read and study the information carefully, but they have all of their applicants put a package together that is ready for landlord or roommate review. I think they have a branch of MetroRent in LA, or you can probably find a lot of similar places. But LA is huge, so be sure to sign with an agency that specializes in listings for the specific area where you want to live.
