I have a tooth that is cracked in half, not being able to visit a dentist for a few weeks down the road ive gone to the ER. They have prescribed Ultram, I have never heard of this medication before. Is it stronger than Vicodin? that is the most powerfull pain med ive taken.

Ultram is a pretty powerful pain killer. It is on par with vicodin, the only major difference is that Ultram is a synthetic narcotic so it's less likely to become addicting.

Mott is right, although maybe your story is legitimate. Even if YOU happen to be an upright and honest citizen who would NEVER mislead an emergency department doctor while seaking narcotics, the ten people before you with the exact same story were dope heads who have held onto their broken-in-half tooth for years so they can support their claim of extreme pain. These people are usually "passing through" and they promise to "see their regular dentist as soon as they get home."

As a dentist, I even get people who call on the phone and give me the same story, hoping that I will call a pharmacy for them without ever having seen them or their tooth. Eeedyuts!

I think the ER has you figured out. Ultram, I think is a strong, yet non-opioid analgesic used in the treatment and prevention of pain. The ER knows that you want Vicodin©, Percodan©, Darvocette©, Oxycontin©, Morphine or something like that.

The ER's across the country have frequent visitors claiming all sorts of unbearable pain, just to get some dope. We have seen many visitors that inflict pain and torture upon themselves- In hopes of being prescribed some dope. Tooth pain is one of the more common complaints, since it is difficult to verify and ascertain. Another complaint is that of lower back pain, another difficult syndrome to verify.
