Yes you can train a dog yourself - the prefered method in the US (I have a feeling you are not) is a class, usually 1 evening a week, where YOU take the dog & YOU teach it under the guidence of an instructor. Not one where you send the dog alone. Sometimes the sent off dog does decide it need not work for the home folks (especally if they seen to not be serious) and then if you haven;t learned how to enforce it - well you have a problem.
There are some good books if a class is no option

Firstly i would recommmend taking your dog to puppy clases so you can train it and get it socalised with other dogs. You can train your pet to do stuff yourself but it will take time and patience and even if you send it to "school" you will need to keep the training up when it comes back.

Using a clicker or treat system is a great way to train your puppy but no more than 20 mins a day beacuse then you can keep it as a play thing and the puppy will be more interested in doing what you want it to do.

Yes your pet will do as you say if it goes away to the school but you will have to use the commands the trainers use and not your own which you might find more usefull and as i said before you will have to make sure you keep up the training at home so they get use to the commands coming from you .

as long as your dog has a degree of inteligence or is motivated by you in a nice and friendly way you will be able to get it to do pretty much anything you would like thoug it is not a slave don't foreget that.

Well done for getting him to sit and coming already i would suggest the next couple of tricks should be wait and lie-down.

Don't send it away to a trainer unless you know the trainer extremely well. Take courses with your dog (most of the training needed is for the humans, not the dogs). That way, you also learn how to handle the dog, how to give it commands, how to treat it, and in the long run, it strongly builds the bond between you and your dog (which is extremely important).

Your lab might also be ready for a 'puppy kindergarden' which some trainers offer, where it's a class full of puppies, and it also works on socialization, along with teaching the owners how dogs act and why.

training classes are expensive and are not needed in my opinion all training can be done at home with the aid of a good book if you don't have any knowledge of dog training, you will be suprised how simple and quickly a dog will pick up simple comands like sit, come and stay
