One of the funniest movies ever. I really identified with Miles, the middle-aged, just divorced wine lover looking for some direction in his life.
The wine tasting scenes were really well done. The Sanford stop (the first one in the movie), was the actual owner, pouring in their tasting room. It really is a funky little log cabin at the end of a dirt road. I have been to Solvang. That was the actual swimming pool at the Days Inn Buellton Windmill hotel, which is walking distance from the Hitching Post restaurant. And there is a real ostrich ranch nearby.
I live in N. Cal and like to wine taste in Napa and Sonoma. The most fun is getting to know the owner/wine makers in the small vineyards. Lots of really good wines, too.

Sideways the movie has had a remarkable affect on the increased sales of pinot noir, but has caused little decline in the sales of merlot, in my experience. It was kind of a goofy movie and with all the hype over the wine aspect of the movie, I was surprised that The Pour was not a more prominent component of the plot.
Wine tastings are a great experience. While you are waiting to journey to Napa (or other wine regions) check your local markets. Many of the wine shops hold wine tastings almost daily. You can get to taste wines before you buy them and hone your taste buds for the big plunge!

I haven't seen the movie yet... heck, should have rented thast last night! But even without seeing it, it has gotten me drinking pinot noir. (Poor merlot, though - it has gotten a bum rap cuz of this movie.)
Wine tasting is quite a bit of fun, especially when you have someone pouring who knows what they are talking about. You drink more than you realize, so don't be afraid to only take a sip or two of each wine if you are going to taste a lot of wine.
If you don't have access to a local winery, check out the wine shops in town. Many of them will do tastings (heck, even BevMo does tastings) and it's a fun way to start.

Sure, many times.
I went winetasting in the area where the movie was filmed a few years before the movie and it was very very quiet and I reallyenjoyed it. But now I understand it is very crowded.
Visiting a winery and tasting its wine in situ is an ideal way to learn about wine.

The movie didn't do it for me. Seemed like more of a boy movie.
I go wine tasting regularly, both at vineyards and at local stores. I've been to wine tastings in the US & Europe and I love it! : )

I can't say I enjoyed the movie. The wine discussions really seemed like a gimmick to get people to accept the rest of the plotline which was pretty weak, and not altogether original.
