First, forget electrician. It requires a lot of math and English. Plumbing is not as bad.

This may be tough. If none of the links I provide help, he may just consider seeing if a plumber will allow him to work for them (even volunteer some hours if need be) as a helper so he can learn the basics and get into a training school.

Bad GCSE scores makes it hard because plumbing requires more skills then just turning a spanner, but if he is determined and a hard worker, anything is possible:

Phone around the small local electricians in yellow pages. Tell them that you want to learn the trade, you may find one who will take you on and teach you. I learned plumbing and electrical work from books, I can now plumb in a system and rewire a house. I also learned how to re-roof and slate a house, build a house etc, all from books. Teach yourself and start small, it won't take long before you can do anything. People fear electrics and it is this fear that will give you work for life.

If he had poor grades forget about becoming an electrician, algebra is required. For him to get into any type of apprenticeship he should visit the local union hall for his choice of career. They will tell him what he needs to do.

Tell him to try and get an employer to sponser him during his time training or, or like in Ireland to try a training service like FAS

needless to say McCain isn't speaking to voters in l. a. between different aspects. we don't have Joe the plumber. we've Carlos and José the plumber, and Miguel and Pedro the electrician.
