Theoretically 1200:1 is better.... However, please note that there is no industry standard for rating this so the method for rating this varies by manufacturer. This makes comparing the specs between manufacturers pretty useless.

Also remember that contrast ratio is the difference between the blackest blacks and whitest whites and if you are using this for tv/home theater, gives no indication of image quality at all. Actually many commercial front projectors have crazy contrast rations because they are used in board rooms and need to be as bright as possible, paying no attention to color accuracy or anything else.

This is the single biggest difference between commercial projection systems and residential.

Contrast ratio is the ratio of illumination of full-white to full-black in a picture. It can be any number; the specification numbers are rounded off to "neat" values, but the actual measured ratios could be 1185:1, 123:1, etc. There are no "standard" values. In general, the higher the better.

Specified contrast ratio (CR) is a poor guide to actual picture quality, but since all TV manufacturers measure contrast ratio in such a way as to get the best number (highest ratio), it is useful as a comparison between different TVs. The published CR is usually obtained by measuring the light from a full screen at maximum brightness and then from a screen with a full-screen "black" picture. This is called the "on-off" CR and gives the highest ratio numbers. What is important for picture quality is the ratio of light to dark when there is a black-white pattern on the screen. This number is usually much lower, and may not always track the on-off ratio, but you never see it specified.
