I'm not a fellow atheist but it's still a free country right ? So I'll answer the question. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark and people felt that he was a "God freak"....think about it. They knew Jesus was dead. They tortured and crucified Him, buried Him and even put guards at His tomb so no one could mess with things. I wonder how they felt when they saw Him alive again. Maybe the "Jesus freaks" weren't so mentally ill after all!

Yes, some are really scary. Take just this president declaring he is on short wire with God and starting war without a reason. Or our former allies we now search for or fight with.

But lots of 'believers' are not too dangerous. I'll try to list a few types, to my best understanding:
1. Some (mostly low educated people) have difficulty grasping knowledge about real world. They need to believe in something simpler. Whatever, does not matter. Born in one part of world, they'll believe one story. If born in another – then another.
2. Some do not really believe, but think: "I'm a good person with religion or not, but others need to be scared by hell to behave well.
3. For some it is career, money. Or at least it helps, to be in mainstream and to be 'appropriate'.
4. Finally, some probably understand what a wide gap is there between them (with those 'creationism' fantasies) and people who really know about the world, either professionally as scientists or by real curiosity. That makes them really envy and angry.

What scares me is large number of people who have no any idea about the world we live in. They may elect son of a president, they try to teach speculations in schools, may do any crazy thing.

I would not say mentally ill more like conditioned to believe in fairytales and refuse to wake up and see that religion is nothing more than a way of exploiting the ignorance of people...

You see a majority of them are brainwashed into thinking that society will crumble if there is no religion and yet many wars have been fought and started in the name of this god person.

People have been killed in the name of "god" as well, the crusades, the Inquisition, Salem witch trials, native American Indians killed for not converting to christianity by christian missionaries and so forth...

It is best to try and educate them that society can and is capable of living a better life without religion..

Sadly it is hard to undo centuries of brainwashing in believing in myths and fairytales..

I am a Christian and I am already used to being labeled as mentally ill. There are some people who call themselves "christians" but they really aren't.

It's just sad to know that some people hate ALL christians when all the Christians they encountered are just fake Christians.

Please don't generalize the idea that all Christians are mentally ill. Someday you'll understand what I am talking about.

Christians are definitly mentally ill.

How else could you believe that an 80 year old man could round up two of every species on the planet, and keep them on his boat until a flood, which would have destroyed all sea life with the decrease in salinity, was over?

The bible is bullsh*t, and deep down, i think they know it.

Some are. I've been worried a few times. Unfortunately there isn't much way that I know of to be proactive and try to help these people. The best that I can do is hope that somebody in their families can urge them to seek mental counselling.

My mother-in-law is a bible toting FREAK! And she's the biggest hypocrite I know. She swears that no matter what you do in your daily life...as long as you attend church every Sunday...you'll go to heaven. That applies to the pedophiles that live down the street and the guy who just blew up a building in Afghanistan. So of course I'm going straight to hell since I havent stepped foot in a church since I lost my cell phone and hoped someone turned it in there. What the hell is wrong with these dillusional people?

All religions are ludicrous, yet people read these silly holy books, or listen to nonsensical religious stories, and believe them! Though I have met many religious people who are mentally ill, I believe that a low IQ is the problem for most of them.
