I've found that the most beautiful things are selfishly made. The artist should focus on what he/she wants to create, not what society wants them to create. The only problem here, though, is that it's extremely difficult for an artist who works solely for him-/herself to earn enough money to live comfortably. The only way for an artist to become rich from his/her art today (in my opinion) is to lower his/her standards and create what society wants to see. So, I agree, mediocraty is status quo.

An artist shouldn't create things to placate to anyone. Art is an expression that can be based on function or form from whatever medium the artist chooses. In turn, art will always have an aesthetic response whether it be negative or positive.
I fail to see the relevancy between art and marketing to consumers, unless you're saying that art is being used for manipulation purposes instead of true deep, aesthetics. If that is what you're saying, then yes, I agree that art is now used for the purpose of propaganda, mind control, and profit.
We have truly lost the essence of art.

it depends
why is the artist creating?
if the artist is creating for himself, then it should be for himself
if the artist is trying to move his audience, then he should create for the audience
this isn't a moral issue, its just a choice, whatever the artist chooses is fine
but the audience will not pay to see something that does not do something for them, and they shouldn't
mediocrity is always the status quo, most of the performances will be in the middle, mediocre, thats what the word means
only a small percentage of anything will be on the superior end
Sturgeon's Law (named after the author that coined it) is:
90% of everything is crud.

favourite human being manufacturers, lack of music courses is faculties, Spinless membership Djs, funds, those who're in no way linked with music, childrens ------ I agree on. also the actual undeniable reality that, anybody can make music NOW. I mean, anybody. All you gotta do is DL FL Studio or reason and also you're set. list a music over a prototypical loop, with some heavy drums about killing ,placed it on myspace and also you're set. Its that user-friendly now. Used to take 3 months(no lie, im in a music history type) to push a music. Love in this membership by Usher became released in an afternoon from Polow the Don's pc.

I might be able to shed some light on this. I myself am an artist. To me personally, my art focuses on my own thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I find it a way to express myself, especially since I often find it hard to express myself in words. Art to me gives me a way to give insight to my own self. As for thinking about what others may say or think, sure they have the right to critque your work, and sometimes others thoughts help me, but I don't ever let others dicourage me. After all, who knows a person better than themselves. Be your own self. Try to be different from the normal. Express yourself. Hopefully this can help you.

That's the question artists are always asking themselves. Is an artist who sells well necessarily a "sellout"? Hard to say.
I think you have to remain true to yourself and do your art; hopefully someone will appreciate it and buy it. The term "starving artist" is ubiquitous for a reason.

True art comes from the soul. If it is re-directed for wrongful purposes, it will no longer be art.....it would be advertising!
