I was reading a classified for a 1961 Volkswagen bus.
and it stated it had lots of Patina...

It was a misspelling. It means it had lots of Katrina. I would be cautious buying this vehicle, although old VW's do float.

patina is not rust. It is the accumulation of dirt and wear associated with unrestored cars, furniture, ect. It is not necessarily undesirable. Many show cars have good patina. Meaning that they look as old as they are, but not like brand new cars, and not neglected, just used. Leather, wood all get more interesting with patina. in the case of the car your looking at a nice way to say rust. patina referees to an aged finish that metal takes on.

I could also only mean oxidation on the finish and bright pieces.
