Grams is weight and cup is volume. Only for pure water is one gram = 1 ml. If your recipe calls for grams and it's not water (for example, flour or butter) it is better to use a scale.

142.5 ml in a cup is the answer I chose but the real problem is that there are at least 3 liquid measures called a cup and all within about 10 ml of each other . any way for water one ml =1 gram so a cup holds 142.5 ml and so 142.5 gm

It should hold 250ml of water which is exactly 250grams

Water weighs the same as kilos so if you have 1litre of water you have one kilo same with the grams 250 ml of water = 250 grams. Not all cups are the same!
