Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was Rs 75/-
Each one contributed Rs.25/-.
The waiter took the bill to the cashier.
The cashier was happy & decided to give them a discount of Rs.5/- & asked the waiter to return them Rs.5/-.
Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute Rs 5 among 3 persons?
He kept Rs 2 in his pocket & gave one rupee to each one of the 3 persons.
So initially each one had contributed Rs.25. Now as they are given 1 rupee back, their contribution reduces to Rs 24.
They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 rupees are in the waiters pocket.
The total becomes 74. But they had paid Rs 75.
Where is the remaining 1 rupee?

The bill was 75.
They paid 25 each.
After paying a total of 5 Rs from the check was refunded.
Therefore, for all intents and purposes, they paid, in total, 70 Rs.

The one dollar disappears when you do the math the way you did, because it does not take into consideration that the refund was on the entire check and not per person paid. Had the 5 Rs been distributed evently, each person would have received 1.67 Rs. So, each person's real contribution was 23.33 Rs.

Even if the waiter did steal the 5 Rs, they still got a 5 Rs discount

25*3=75-5=70+2=72
They each paid 24 seeing they each got 1 back
and the waiter kept 2
72-the 2 the waiter kept=70
70/3=23.33333333*3=69.99999999
(rounded)=70
Which is what the bill is.

You should be counting the three that they got back. The two in his pocket are included in teh 24x3=72 :)

Great riddle. Took me a while to figure it out, the first time I heard it.

I hope I'm not spoiling it for anyone by posting... :D
