The great thing about birds is that they're incredibly visual creatures. They will notice things that humans will miss, while humans will smell and hear things that most birds will miss.

A sparrow will be able to see the color of your cloths and possibly any ultraviolet colors on you. Most humans wear glasses and jewelry, so sparrow would notice that right away. I've hears of sparrows who get used to a house owner and will not panic when the owner walks in the yard. However when a stranger walks in, the sparrow will leave.
