ABS can change the stopping distance (lower it) on wet or snowy roads, because it keeps the maximal amount of pressure on the brakes. However, the primary purpose of ABS is to keep the tires from locking up and thus allowing you to have steering control. You can stop better if you can apply pressure just short of lockup on the brakes, which is not easy, particularly in an emergency.
Hate to say it, but you were too close to the car in front of you...

Well this is a double edge question , there is a time frame that it takes to engage the the system in a panic situation, and some of the eunurcha systems only act when the vehicle lunges forward then its activated and ,that sometimes is to late for close hard braking, so in your case i would say yes, and the second generation system Avionic anti lock brakeing systems, the brake pedal when pushed super fast it takes a few milliseconds for the pedal to click and go to the floor so this is the time frame i am talking about ,the time it take once the system knows its a panic stop all these things must occur then the computer takes over, it happens very fast but then again it depends how close you are to the other vehicle,

No. Most people's reaction to a panic stop is to jam the brakes to the floor. Without ABS the tires would lock and skid further than the ABS stopping distance. Unless there was something wrong in your particular system or pad worn out, I would say you were just too close to stop under any condition.

Yes it does. ABS is only good in snow and ice, then if you know how to drive it is worthless.
The last car I bought I made sure it didn't have it, ABS is trash, but being people make a living making it they will say it's great.
If the road is dry and you slam your brakes on, without abs the tires will drag, and the car will stop faster, with abs the tires will not drag, it will taken long for the car to stop.

they say no but i also believe my reaction time is faster than the abs but most peoples cant. i relate to what your saying i have avoided many accidents without once drive a new truck i had i did a hard stop the anti lock kicked in it seemed like 2 seconds before the truck even started to slow and from my driving experience i believe i could have stopped in a shorter distance but there is no way to prove it

yes abs can be counter productive on ice they make it virtually imposable to bump your brakes because they are trying to do that for you
