I went through my bible and came across different meanings of the word "fornication"...but I can't seem to locate where in the bible does the bible suggests that if one is engaged, they should not have sex, as it is commonly known and preached. It seems the verses that I come across refer to committing adultery but using the word "fornication"...unless I am wrong.

I just want to know what God wants. Please explain the meaning of the word "fornication" and "adultery" according to the bible.

I know "fornication" and "adultery" are sometimes referred to as "Idolatory"

To Truth Revealed

This question was not for people who backslid in from the True God, Jesus Christ...It was for Christians...

Really if this person was really born-again in the first place, he would not have backslid in Islam...

He records things he remembers according to definitions of words of Christian denominations and NOT THE REAL EXPERIENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!

To Steves Wifey

I am glad you gave the definitions of the word "fornication" but it does not seem to say whether "having sex with a woman you are engaged to is sin...

What's strange is that it seems Joseph was engaged to Mary but the bible calls Joseph a "husband" to Mary even though they were engaged....

Looking at this, Is it not possible, that according to God, when you are engaged you are as good as married, only you have not made a ceremony? I mean the bible calls "Joseph" Mary's husband.

I know that adultery is wrong...that one is out of the question!

The bible talks of "fornication"...ok, but where in the bible does it suggest that "FORNICATION" is pre-marital sex?

I can understand if someone says "Fornication" is sexual immorality...but is one immoral if he has sex with his own fiance'?

I can understand if one says that sexual immorality is sleeping with many women you are not engaged to or sleeping with someone you are not ENGAGED TO...

Please explain

Please guys, don't assume that I encourage Christians to have pre-marital sex with their boyfriends! All I am saying is let's set the definitions clear and not assume things according to the standards of this generation, but according to God.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

1 Corinthians 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

Fornication-A primitive root (highly fed and therefore wanton); to commit adultery (usually of the female, and less often of simple forniciation, rarely of involuntary ravishment); figuratively to commit idolatry (the Jewish people being regarded as the spouse of Jehovah): - (cause to) commit fornication, X continually, X great, (be an, play the) harlot, (cause to be, play the) whore, (commit, fall to) whoredom, (cause to) go a-whoring, whorish.

Adultery-A primitive root (highly fed and therefore wanton); to commit adultery (usually of the female, and less often of simple forniciation, rarely of involuntary ravishment); figuratively to commit idolatry (the Jewish people being regarded as the spouse of Jehovah): - (cause to) commit fornication, X continually, X great, (be an, play the) harlot, (cause to be, play the) whore, (commit, fall to) whoredom, (cause to) go a-whoring, whorish.

There is not much difference between the both of them. The common denomator is that they are not accpetable to God.

You are not to have sex unless you are married. There is no grey area. Satan is the one who puts ideas like that into people's minds to trick them into sinning against God. Don't fall for it.

no. idolatory means: worshipping idols.
has nothing to do with fornication.
fornication means: any sex sin b/4 marriage, engaged or not. same thing. it's a sin.
until u r actually married, in the eyes of god any sex prior to being actually married is wrong, sin.
adultery is: sex with another partner besides your actual spouse. married or single partner, makes no difference if u r married.
it's still considered a sex sin too.
ok now here's scriptures: sexual immorality is sinful & needs to be avoided.
romans 13:14, james 1:21, 1thessalonians 4:3-6, galatians 5:19-21
our bodies belong to god & need to be pure.
1 corinthians 6:19-20
don't even get close to sexual impurity
ephesians 5:3, proverbs 6 :27
be totally pure
leviticus 19:2, 1peter 1:16, james 1:27
don't submit to pressure sexually or in any other area.
Isaiah 51:7
each individual has a choice to stay pure.
1peter 2:11, james 1:14,
guard purity of the mind as well as the body.
matthew 5:28, job 31:1
protecting purity in marriage begins long b/4 the marriage.
hebrews 13:4
avoid immorality by pursuing what's pure.
2timothy 2:22, colossians 3:5-10, romans 8:5-6.
be determined & committed to stand strong w/god's help.
Isaiah 50:7
these should answer all your questions & confusion.

The literal translation of the word Fornication is "Sexual Immorality" Unfortunately, that leaves a lot to be discussed and debated. Different churches have different meanings for that, and since I am probably gonna get hunted down by everyone in this group for giving the translation, I'd better stop talking now.

Adultery, by definition, is sexual relations with someone other than your spouse. Of course, if you have no spouse, then it is quite impossible for you to commit adultery, but that doesn't mean you can't commit sexual immorality. Basically... adultery is cheating on your hubby or wife.

(Incidentally... you might also do some research on the words betrothed and concubine to help with your understanding of the Bible and sexuality).

There is a difference between those two acts.
Fornication is just premarital sex.
Adultery is when one or both engage in sexual behavior with another person while married. When Brad Pitt left his wife for Angelina Jolie, that made him an adulterer and Jolie and adulteress. So you see, adultery has to do with the married ones.

As one who majored in Religious Studies, I can tell you that in just about every culture in the world, adultery is ranked one of the worst sins. There are some religions where adultery is worst then committing murder.

Fornication or pre-marital sex...shrug, you follow your conscience. I'm not going to tell you what to do.

Let me ask you this: Would it be ok to have sex with a complete stranger? How about a coworker that you have worked with for a really long time? The bible says that the MARRIAGE bed is undefiled.
Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 the word fornicators is the Greek word "pornos" and it means "a person who indulges in unlawful sexual intercourse, a fornicator"
unlawful sex is unmarried sex.
IF you REALLY want to know what God wants look up where the word "Holy" appears in the New Testament and you decide.

(sorry i just reread you question and realized i missed your point the first time around) adultery is a spouse cheating on their partner with someone else--pretty simple. It's also a metaphor used when people stray from God and resort to sin.

Idolatry is anything that dishonors God by honoring something else...not just worshipping another false god.
As for fornication.. it's still a debate between interracial intercourse or pre-marital sex. What did they mean? If fornication refers to the interracial issue, then it still doesn't answer you question with a definite answer. And when you're not sure, wait. Because by doing so you're demonstrating to God where you place him in the relationship's priority--before yourselves which constitutes a godly relationship.

Leviticus 18:17. For a man to have sex with his fiance that is the same as having sex with any woman. The bible is very clear. Jesus even said that just because we have crush in our mind we already have sex with the person. In this case Jesus is extending the definition of sexual impurity... but He is right, because the sin begins with what happen in our thought, and that thought might lead the deed.

Adultery and fornification basically have the same meaning, which is the sexual sin with other people that is not your wife or husband, bound by marriage.

The Bible doesn't 'specifically' say that having sexual relations with you fiance is sin. See, when two people are married (a man and a woman) they become one body united with God. When the two bodies then have sex, they create a third body (a child), symbolizing the Holy Trinity. Thus, three in person (husband, wife, child) and three in spirit (husband/wife as one, God, and child) God created everything to be viewed as spiritual. Marriage and sex is a very serious issue in God's eyes.

I agree with the definition of fornication(any sex outside of marriage). but bottom line is by not respecting each other by believing that you are "worth waiting for" you hurt your relationship. You got a lifetime together. And if he is pushing for sex too soon I would question His motives.

In these days of 50% divorce for first time marriages and 70% for 2nd marriages do you want to rush anything, or do anything that could hurt your chances of going the distance together?

Sex outside marriage is a sin.

An oddly related story is one in the Old Testament.

A foreign leader's son rapes the Hebrew girl Dinah. Strangely enough, he falls in love with her and wishes to marry her.

His family arranges a marriage for her and him privately, between the brothers, with the catch that all the men of the village (of Dinah's raper's) become circumcised.

The men are all circumcised, and Dinah's older brothers go and kill all of them.

The lesson of the story was that it's wrong to rape.

A looser form of lesson would be that it's wrong to have sex before marriage. If Dinah had been married to the man, then he wouldn't have been killed.

So, just wait until marriage.
