Weight gain is a cardinal symptom of hypothroidism. If you have been diagnosed as such 10 years now....you should be on medication to boost your thyroid hormones which would then allow you to lose weight if you are on the proper dosage. Talk to your doctor about more blood work to see if your dosage is right.

Honey? Look it up on the internet. Actually, this is just me and my brains working. No Wikpedia here. I had an overactive thyroid. I was instructed to use a lot of iodized salt in my diet. I am only 5'1" tall and have never weighed over 105(except when pregnant 120 lbs.). It sounds as if your thyroid is underactive. I don't think you need salt. It sounds almost like diabetes. Please go to the doctor and get a for sure on it, okay? You may be diabetic. Pleeeeeeze go to the doctor. Big hugs for miles, (((Sheri)))) Good luck honey!
p.s. I was always so underweight, I got teased really bad in school. Really skinny folks and overweight ones do have something in coomon. If you're not perfect, sometimes the world can be a mean place. I care. Go back to the doctor, okay? :)

It is when your thyroid gland does not produce enough of the hormone needed to keep your systems running well. I was diagnosed with this a few years ago. The only good treatment is to be prescribed a little pill that you will have to take every day for the rest of your life, like I do. I don't have any side effects, it has actually made me feel better. I was also able to finally lose some weight after getting treatment for it. It take some time for the hormone pills to get to work, but once they do, it is good.

Thyroid is an organ that everyone has. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which your thyroid is not as active as it should be. The thyroid is involved in multiple body functions including metabolism. If you have hypothyroidism you should be on medication. Although being on the medication will help the thyroid problem, it will not a cure the weight problem, to lose weight you must exercise and eat right.

when your thyroid doesnt produce enough thyroid hormones.
caused by a lack of iodine i think.
i know that an excess of iodine causes hyperthyroidism(very common in my family). so i guess less iodine causes hypothyroidism.
