The answer is, you can choose to kiss her butt if you want
but that won't help. You are better off to stand your ground and just accept the fact she doesn't like you. I have been married almost 15 years and it has not and will not change.

do NOT kiss butt under any circumstances. DONT DONT DONT! stand your ground. it's not like she can do ANYTHING about it! Her son obviously likes you and married you and she's just jealous because her son isn't hers anymore and it's not your fault. If she can't be mature enough to handle it, that's her problem. You just go on with your life and don't kiss butt. you're WAYYYY better than that
= )
and seriously you can NEVER get on a nasty mother in law's GOOD side no matter how much you kiss butt

Ask her about her pride & joy...her son! Have her show you childhood photos & talk about the past & relatives that should know in case you ever have children & you want to pass down some family history. You gotta go easy, because she probably doesn't know you very well & her nastiness may be due to the fact that she feels a sense of loss by your marriage & it could be that she feels she could take care of him better than you & you need to get her to see that this is a different era & you won't be following in her footsteps because he only needs ONE MOTHER & that is HER! You may not be the woman SHE would have chosen to marry her son, but if she wants to continue having a happy rellationship with him, she'll need to understand that HE choose you & have him back you up by telling her nicely, yet firmly, that he won't tolerate any bickering between the two of you. He needs to let her know that he loves the BOTH of you & that all this "tension" will force him to make a decision & that might be that he will need to "ban" her from your lives until she gets the message. She could be going through menopause & this makes older women very mean spirited & you could ask her what menopause is like. You might be surprised at the things she has inside her head!

Be kind to her but only if it's genuine. If she doesn't like you for some reason (which often happens regardless of how wonderful you are) then you'll never get on the good side no matter what you do. If she's like my mother-in-law there may not be a good side to get on in the first place!

Just be yourself and if she doesn't like you tough. My mother in-law never liked me but you know I didn't care. I didn't marry her I married her son. So stand your ground and tell her where to go. You will feel better about yourself. Good luck.

Ask her what she want to do and try to do your best to gain her respect. She may some day do what you want to do and you could get a good relationship and have a real mother-in-law as it should be.

Don't hold your breath. There is nothing on the face of the Earth you can do. Thus, you should not care one bit what she thinks and just love your spouse.

This always works. Make sure that you express to her that when she dies you are going to buy the best head stone with your own (drinking) money. After that, you'll taste like honey to her.
