First, I read the other answers and I strongly encourage you to stay away from any pills/drugs. They may work at first, but the effects wear off quickly. I had the same problem and used it to my advantage. I now work third shift, ironically, diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Some people have different bio rhythms, and that is what starts the problem. Talk with your doctor and see if he can get you in to a sleep clinic. That is the first step. Second, make a routine and stick to it. Don't use your bed for anything but sleeping. If you read, watch TV, or anything like that, your brain associates that with being in bed. Keep your room at a cool temp. Your body needs to cool off to sleep. When you fall asleep, your body temp drops, allowing your brain to rest. So if the room is too hot, your body is too hot and you wont sleep. hope this helps. And good luck. I know how frustrating it can be.

make sure you get some exercise and don't toss and turn. Tossing and turning tells your brain that the bed is not for sleeping. The bed should only be for sleeping and sex. If you must toss and turn get out of bed and watch some baseball or listen to some Jack Johnson.

Stay off all caffeine don't drink tea before bed as it will keep you tinkling all night.Read a novel, boring novel, goodgood one will keep you up.Try not to use sedatives due to dependacy.Try to empty thoughts of yesterday and tommorrow.Close your eyes and picture a flickering flame.Concentrate and see if you can make the flame stand still. These have all worked for me at different times.Good luck.

Is there something keeping you awake? Something on your mind? This is the first thing to address. Secondly, a product named Melatonin works very well for some people. Look under supplements in a drug store.

NyQuil. It's funny but it works.
Try exercising a lot that day to make yourself tired enough to sleep.
