Use a tripod.
I don't think the D50 has a mirror lock up function, but if it does, use it.
Set the aperture to f/8. With most lenses, that's the sweet spot.
Set the zoom to around 280mm. With most zooms, image quality deteriorates at the extremes of the zoom.
I don't think the D50 has spot metering, but if it does, use it.
Take sevearal shots with different ev settings. Experiment with over/ under exposing.

Yes! ISO! at 100, or lowest!Set for different exposure! Sometimes WB needs to be changed! BUt 300 is pretty good!!! 300 zoom tent to have some weak spots at 300mm! but if you have dough for a 400 Prime or 500mm! Those cost $$$$$$$$ BUt your pictures will be awsome!! Canon has a special camera that has a lo pass filter that takes small bits of light and see them!! they are for astronomers! but moom is good too!!! its called Canon 20Da there are the 20D but the 20Da is a special model! harder to find! and Canon has the most lenses for everything!! from 14mm to 600mm or even at 1200mm is you have 80,000 for a huge lens!! LOL!! but have fun!
