Does he like stickers? We made a sticker chart and taped it to the bathroom mirror. Then we picked out favorite character stickers and bug stickers. My son got a small sticker that he got to wear and one to put on his chart when he used the potty. It really won't matter what you try if he isn't ready yet physically. Can he nap for an hour or two and still be dry? This is one sign to look for. Good luck.

I tried potty training my son at that age and it didn't work. He is 4 1/2 now and is potty trained. I tried everything! Books, Movies, rewards, etc. and nothing worked. It seems like around the time he turned 4 it just clicked! You can't force potty training! It just comes with time.

just the process will help with both skills.

while you may be eager to be done with diapers (who isn't?) pushing it along will take more time than if you wait until they are ready. When they are ready it just clicks.

Also, potty training is hard. they don't just learn to use the potty instead of the diaper but they have to be able to recognize the feelings in their bowels, bladder and anticipate what is going to happen and then plan for it. It is something that matures physically and intellectually.

If your child is struggling with language (like mine is right now too) much of his brain activity and focus is on mastering that skill and making sense of what is said and trying to figure out how to get what he wants. He is likely unable to divert his attention to use the potty.

I suggest you invite him into the bathroom with you. Begin talking about it. Maybe buy a play one for him to play with so that he is comfortable but give it a little time.

When it seems like it is taking forever just remember that these kids won't go to college in diapers.

best wishes.

you don't.
Most children show signs of readiness to begin using the toilet as toddlers, usually between 18 months and 3 years of age.
Signs of potty training readiness:
*staying dry for at least 2 hours at a time
*having regular bowel movements
*being able to follow simple instructions
*being uncomfortable with dirty diapers and wanting them to be changed
*asking to use the potty chair, or asking to wear regular underwear
You should also be able to tell when your child is about to urinate or have a bowel movement by his facial expressions, posture or by what he says.

You could just wait untill they can tell you when they have to go. Being able to tell you they have to go is the only real way you have of potty training him. If he can't tell you what he needs yet you have to guess and it may be traumatic for him to being put on the toilet constantly and not having to go and not being able to tell you what he needs. I would wait. You could try to just teach him basic words about it like peepee or poopoo. Me and my fiance are trying to potty train his daughter and she can't talk yet either. She sometimes will go into the bathroom as if to tell us she has to go, when she does this we let her try. She is starting to learn peepee and poopoo, so I figure once she knows these words she is good to go. Dont rush it he's still young and eventually he will get the hang of it.

i got a simple solution that worked for my husband and I withour daughter. We call going pee....shee shee.... it's japanese and we live in hawaii. My husband is white and I am korean french...but it works... it's easy for her to understand. We use potty for when she has to poop. Easy words. Don't rush your child ...the world is so competitive today for adults it's not fair that they are now starting this on pre-schoolers. Just encourage...but don't press...don't limit juice...just encourage and be there. the sticker didn't work for us...but a little cookie jar with special cookies only for potty time...and you give a peice if they try but don't go...and give a whole cookie if their successful. good luck

Do you sign with him at all? I have been signing with my boys and it helps that he knows the sign for potty and can tell me he wants to go this way.
