-There is no mention of God or Jesus in the Constitution. A "Creator" is referred to in the Dec. of Ind., but it is not specified to be the Christian one.
-The Treaty of Tripoli, ratified June 10, 1797: "As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion; ..."
-The original Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 and did not contain the phrase "under God". It was not added until 1954 under the Eisenhower administration, influenced by the Cold War against the "godless Communists" at the time.
-The words "In God We Trust" were not printed on our bills or coins until after the Civil War.
-Virtually every major Founding Father was not a Christian, or at least doubted it in some aspects. Several quotes for each one:

So...to the Christians going around saying otherwise...yeah, how's it feel to be pwned?

cnote_73...that hardly means that there is no freedom of religion. I'd like to see you move to some rural conservative community in the Middle East and try to worship something else than what the people there do...then you will understand what not having freedom of religion means.
Legally, we are truly free to worship or not worship as we want, but our President is a Christian. He talks to the nation like everyone listening is a Christian who believes in his god, but they don't of course. That's just being politically incorrect, he's not shouting at nonbelievers that they are going to die and burn in hell or whatever.

MadforMAC, YOU need to do some research you brainwashed douche. Did you even read any of this at all? Almost all of the Founding Fathers have been quoted as not being Christian. Look at the links instead of blathering off like an imbecile. Are you blind? Do YOU have any research, facts?
Yes, I know that a significant percentage of Americans are Christian TODAY, but that does not mean that our country was originally FOUNDED as a Christian nation. READ. READ. READ.

iammisc: Yes, actually, a lot of the Founding Fathers were Freemason. Freemason is not a religion, it accepted members of all religons as long as they believed in a God. Most of the Founding Fathers were Deists.

You need to do more research. First, our founding fathers and mothers were Christians, the ones who penned all of our important documents were Christians too. The Creator to them was God, obviously. All of the colonists that arrived here first were Christians escaping the hardships of religious censorship. So, I suggest you go back to the drawing board, your information is flawed and the proof is in our history. America was founded by Christians, is considered to be a Christian country by the world and 85% of the people living in the U.S. claim to be Christian. Intelligent people realize that when they look at history, they need to be very careful who they get the information from. There are many history books that leave out women, people of color, true events, etc. How do I know this, simple, I was going to be a history teacher.

cnote_73's answer is stupid. You cannot argue that America was founded on Christian values by pointing to George W. Bush as an example. Last time we all checked he's about 200 years too late to have helped found this country. Anyway, I agree, this country was founded upon freedom of religion, not Christian values. And I too have heard numerous Christians make the same statement. Many of the founding fathers were believers in Deism.

Our country was founded by fairly liberal, open minded, free thinking men who wanted the best possible world where everyone could believe as they wished, where everyone could feel safe if they chose not to believe in a certain religion.
Christian religions were granted freedom of speech, freedom from persecution. But so were all groups that did not have a public voice at the time. America was made up of immigrants, many who fled countries where certain religions were forced upon them. The last thing our founding fathers wanted was a church controlled government.

Founded on Christian ideals with freedom and tolerance of religion.
That sounds a little contradictory now though.

No, it wasn't; infact, most of the writers of the constitution weren't Christian. I think most were Agnostic, Atheist, or, at the very least, Theist. I think that of they had WANTED a Christian nation, they wouldn't have included FREDDOM OF RELIGION.

No it wasn't, it was place where people could exercise their freedom to practice whatever religion they chose, because they were being persecuted for their religion in Europe.
