Ammunition is the complete cartridge, primer, powder, and bullet assembly.
A bullet is just what goes into the end of the cartridge and is propelled by the primer.

washoelisa, the first answer has given the best reply, she should get the best answer.

A bullet is the projectile, and can be bought seperately for reloading.
Ammunition is the complete and manufactured cartridge. Case primer, powder, projectile (bullet, shot etc., shotgun shells also have a wad).

All the other stuff about rimfire vs. centerfire, and missles, gernades, and stuff don't have any bearing on this question.

Bullet = projectile. Ammunition = primer, power, case, projectile.

Ammunition is anything fired from a prjectile weapon, a bullet has the projectile, powder, & priming cap all in one unit. Other forms of ammo include the lead balls that were packed into the barrel of a black powder gun after the powder & primer were packed in, also, a missle on a fighter jet is considered ammo, but not a bullet since it actually carries fuel to fly, instead of being "Pushed" out of a barrel.

Bullets and ammunition are terms commonly used to refer to to the same thing which is firearm cartriges. The bullet is actualy the projectile at the end of the cartrige. the centerfire cartrige is composed of these four componets: bullet, case, gunpowder, primer. The rimfire cartrige has it's primer built into the case. Ammunition could be anything from pellets for your pellet gun to 120mm cannon shells.

Webster's say's for Bullet: A shaped piece of metal made to be shot from a firearm.

Ammunition: Anything that can be hurled at a target, especially anything propelled by OR containing explosives, as BULLETS, shells , grenades, and bombs. Anything MATERIAL that may be used in attack or defense.

A bullet is just the very end part that is actually propelled to the target.

A round is the entire unit: the bullet + propellant + casing.

Ammunition is a more generic term than that even.

think about a normal bullet vs. a shotgun shell

both are ammunition, but a bullet is solid, while the shotgun shell may contain bird shot or a solid slug.

bullets are also centerfire v. rimfire.
