I am officially more Christian than most Christians, since I have actually read the Bible (several times in fact). Why do people always bash me and try to say that I obviously hav enever read the Bible, then try and quote it and write something that is not even in it???? It makes me sick how many hypocrites there are in this section.

Most atheists know the Bible better than Christians. I think most of us got our start as Christians before wising up (usually by 5th grade, or so).

How else would we know how riddled with contradictions the Bible is? How ignored it's instructions are (still waiting to see a "Christian" sell their belongings and give the money to the poor, as Jesus instructs in the Book of Matthew)? How flawed it's version of history is?

Atheists become atheists through wisdom, not ignorance.

Enlighten Heart, write a tempting summary and a link instead of copying/pasting so much here. Thanx.

I'm not surprised, here in Answers I've learned that many an atheist has read the Bible. Even Clarence Darrow read it for the Scopes trial. He wasn't an atheist, but an agnostic.

If atheist seek the truth, and if that is what you are doing, I don't know, then why stop at the Bible? Why not read the Qur'an? Bhagavad Gita? Vedas? Baha'i Holy Writings? Try 'em.

It is a great book to read no matter what you believe, and there are tons of hypocrites to go around on all sides. To really understand the bible though takes more than reading the words it means study. One of the most famous atheists did just that he wanted to get a book out to prove his point that there is no God. After all his research he authored the book called The Greatest Story Ever Told, another former atheist tried the same thing and ended up writing Mere Christianity ,The Screw Tape Letters,The Narnia Series. I say do more than read study the text ,the original Greek and Aramaic to understand it as written, after that you will be armed with much more than words.
Take care hope that helps ~A~

Congratulations. But reading the Bible doesn't make you more Christian than anyone. You're still an atheist. I know a ton of people who can't even read who are more Christian than you. It doesn't take literacy to be a Christian.

Also, just because you've read the Bible certainly doesn't mean that you understand it. Its the Holy Spirit who reveals Truth, whether by means of the Bible or otherwise.

If you are not Christian, you do not have the Holy Spirit. And although you may be able to regurgitate facts or quote scripture certainly does not mean that you have a clue what you're talking about. I don't know this about you, but I have seen many atheists quote scripture incorrectly, or out of context, in order to trap weaker minded people.

I might assume that you've read the Bible in order to be wise. But it's also possible that you're like the atheist I've just described. I'll check out your other Q&A to find out.

Look for my next question. It's for you.

I agree completely that the vast majority of people who claim to be Christian do not at all live up to what Christ taught. Of course this was all foretold. I'm sure you are aware of the following scriptures since you've read the Bible several times:

Titus 1:16
Matthew 7:21-23
2 Timothy 3:5, 13
2 Corinthians 11:14, 15

Of course the Bible foretold too that there would be some (though very few) who would unhypocritically live according to God's standards.

Isaiah 2:2-4
Matthew 7:14

I totally agree, 100%. Whenever I say I've read the bible or give an opinion on the meaning of a particular passage, all I get is "You're an agnostic/atheist... what do you know?" or "If you'd really read it, you would believe."

The majority of Christians think that atheists and agnostics are ignorant idiots who have never contemplated religion or God at all and just deny God or the bible. They don't have the ability to understand that most of us have read the Bible and other religious texts in our search for the truth. They don't have the ability to think outside their religious "box" to accept that they might not be the only ones to have read the bible.

If only more Christians knew as much about the bible and its meanings as Atheists and Agnostics, this world would be a better place.

Tell me about it! I'm Wiccan, have been for 15 years and have read the bible a total of 7 times cover to cover for 1)a good laugh 2)studied it from a historical aspect and 3) studied it as literature. And then ya get these idiots on here who try to quote something not even relavent to the discussion, like john 3:16 is the answer to everything.I've learned to laugh at them in their ignorance.

I'm not suprised. I know plenty of Bible-reading athiests. I am a Christian and I read my Bible a lot (I sometimes read the Quar'an just out of curiosity) and I almost always quote scripture directly and give the exact reference. I might slip up once in a while, but anyway... no, I'm not suprised at all. And good for you for doing your homework. My biggest pet peeve is when atheists pretend to quote the Bible and write something that's not in it.

I'm not surprised. Not in the least! Many atheist believe in God. I know that sounds backwards but it's true.

If they did not believe in God... why would they try so hard to prove he doesn't exist? We all know the boogeyman doesn't really exist..but I never see any people protesting his existence.

Many atheist only hope they're right. Of course they're not. But if you truly didn't believe in God... why read the Bible? Why fight against a force that, in your opinion, is not there? It's because there is shadow of doubt.

My advice: Give your life to Christ and stop beating your head against a brick wall. Find out that your shadow of doubt is true. I'd rather live right doing what's right and find out I was wrong... then to live wrong doing wrong and find out there is a hell that I'm on my way to.

Best Wishes!

I'm an atheist and I read the first four books, of the bible.
The linage stuff was too boring, that's why I stopped reading it.

It's funny when, I correct a Christan about the bible, it just tickles me. My dad has told me tons of bible stories, when I was growing up, so I know quite a bit as well.
