Loreal is IMO the best box dye out there. Red is a hard colour to do. Any brand of colour will fade like crazy. You will be doing your colour every two weeks to keep up with the fading.

If you want a gorgeous red and no fade and fabulously healthy, mad shiny hair, think about natural henna. I have to-die-for red hair and it is strong, healthy, soft, silky and shiny with no fading. Henna rocks.

Feria and manic panic, but to be honest they are all the same in essence. More depends on what is actually achievable with your type of hair.
(If your hair is dark you can't add colour to get it lighter. That requires bleach first, but go to a professional so it looks great. But dark hair looks good with red over it anyways!)
It fades very fast so you may want a red colour boosting shampoo and conditioner, as well as frequent touch ups.

Loreal Copper Penny I think it's called... it's been years since I've colored my hair though, so they may not make it anymore... my husband wanted to see what my natural hair color looked like, so I stopped dying it, and well, now I don't want to dye it anymore... but my husband likes the color it used to be, so I may lose that debate since he's the one who has to look at me, and he married me under the false pretenses that I was a red-head (I sure have the temper for it).

Garnier products are what I swore by until I was able to buy the professional stuff. I've used both, the Nutresse & the 100% color, I liked the 100% color better though.

Try Garnia's products. I find they're less damaging on the hair, and the avocado-based conditioning treatment that comes with it works best for my hair. There's also a minimal of that horrid peroxide smell too!

I go for Clairol Balsam color (Auburn) or Revlon Nice and Easy (all the red shades really - lighter in summer, darker in winter - bright auburn all year long).

Peace!

Garnier Nutrisse #76 "Hot Tamale"(rich auburn blonde)....I just started using this particular color and it's awesome! I have received wonderful compliments about this shade....and come on who can argue with telling people that your hair color is "Hot Tamale"?

Oxblood liquid shoe polish, it works as a temporary color rinse. Great for holiday color.
