People believe in god because they're terrified of dying, They're so completely attached to themselves that they can't accept the fact that one day, relatively soon, everything about them, save the memories other people have of them, will simply cease to exist. They desperately grasp to anything, even some made up, non existant god, to keep from accepting the truth - there is no existence after death, there is no reason for being, once a person is dead, they're really dead.

Hum a fairly asked question. to which there are different points of view.
most people need a belief in something greater than themselves that started all the things in this plane of existence and there is a reward at the end.
if you are just looking for an answer that you can deal with. witchcraft and the christian bible have a saying that goes (if you can not find me within yourself you will not find me without). Buddhism i believe has one saying ( am i a man thinking i'm a butterfly or a butterfly thinking i'm a man)this might be Taoist saying.
so try looking inside a listen for that small quite voice that is your soul speaking to you.
if you need to look in the opposite direction allot of things have a form of life that we can see. other things still have a form of live that is either faster or slower than ours like a rock or a running stream.
people confuse the death of the body with the end of life because it returns to the earth from which is was made . other new life grows from the remains of the old .soil, grass ,trees. and such.
It is the soul which is a spark of the creator that is immortal.

I believe in God because He's real. It has explained some things and left others a mystery, it has even opened many new questions. For this reason youo can't claim that I believe in God because it explains things. There's still plenty left unexplained.
A greater argument is that if God were invented, we probably would have invented a religion that we were capable of following instead of one that demands perfection we know we can never attain. Man, left to his own devices, will seek the easy way out. Much like you already demonstrated. There's no way that man would have invented the Christian God.

I believe in God because it is the only logical explanation for how the universe began. Evolutions doesn't explain it, the Theory of Evolutions states that everything in the universe came from nothing. It then states that something came out of nothing, started spinning, and then blew up and formed the universe. That is impossible. Destruction does not create anything, and life only comes from life. I believe that God has always existed, He didn't come from anywhere. Some people say that God is a crutch, and that's true. The question is, when you only have one leg do you try to hop everywhere? Or do you use a crutch?

Many people believing in god has no reason but for some purpose.
1. Continue to live after pass away. Due to our biological reason, any creature afraid of die. Our human thus willing to accept something able to console us that die is not the ending.
2. Too many people live in a world filled with unfair, biased treatement. They wish somebody could give them a fair justice, rewards from the most brilliant 'thing', thus they choose to believe in God.
3. Religion did give a solid political power to someone who lead the religion. Since many people believe in God, and this population thus give a power political influences if someone could control the religion.
4. Many natural phenomena is difficult to explain, especially for question like how does the universe begin? why the universe been planned so well that the earth could able to have life? etc. God thus is the most easy and convenient way to explain of this.
5. God is seen as a positive force, to save us from dark and evil. Many people afraid of dark, unforeseeable future, and God could cure the fear in human heart.
6. Society controlling. Many people just blindly believe and following what God said. This becomes a very handy and easy way to control a society and make our society peacefully (at least in theoritically).
I personally believe that, with the accumulated knowledge human created, in one day we could live independent, without the need of God. Do we necessary force us to believe something so abstract while if we have all necessary tools and knowledge to survive peacefully? I believe, with another two or three hundred years, God will disappear.

In studying the Bible and understanding through those studies, yes God does exist and everything does make sense. More and more evidence is being found to this day re: the Books of the Bible. For example, they have found on the floor of the water that was split by God in Exodus there are chariot wheels and parts. Coral has grown over it. It has been filmed and analyzed to the time when it occurred. Fascinating!

i dont choose to believe in god, just like i don't choose to breath air. it just happens naturally. somewhere deep in my heart knows that there is a God, and that he cares about everyone. (most people combat this with the whole "why is there evil on earth thing", but would you rather God take away your free will so that you don't hurt anybody, or let you live by your own decisions. most people would choose their own decisions, and unfortunately some people make some very tragic, very hurtful, and very bad decisions) anyway, the point is that, for me, its instinctual, its a part of me, and i can't change that. its not there because i crammed belief after belief into myself, or because im ignorant. i understand that many things don't make sense about the concept of God. that doesn't change the fact that a deep part of me knows that there is a God, and that he would do anything for anyone at any point in time. the problem is, he doesn't get to choose. we do. and most of us (including myself), are too hurt, or too bitter, or too angry, to really want to let God(let alone anybody) help us. its not always this way, but a lot of the times, buried underneath the surface, alot of us feel that way. anyway, i don't believe in god. it not something for me that requires belief.

the guy above me is kinda strange. We don't "need" something to believe in. Things just happen, and I don't think anyone will ever know why exactly, we're living things. But I personally don't believe in a god either. Everything that I hear said about gods just contradict themselves and seem even more ridiculous, so I just keep on living. :)

According to Stoic Philosophy, a rational person would believe in God because it offers an eternity of rewards in return for just trying to be a better person in life. And if there is no after life? At least you were a good person while it lasted.
