Many people do not realize the influence a person is under when they have a subustance abuse problem. The addiction can really control a person so they do things they would not normally do. Anyone can have a drug addiction, and doctors are the biggest drug pushers. This is how many addictions start. The person may benefit greatly from a Rehabilitation program. Many prisons do not have good or any drug programs.
Here in New Hampshire if you are an alcoholic there is all kinds of help, but if you have a drug addiction, they rather lock you up. In my opinion, drug addictions are a medical condition that should be treated. But after a few times going to rehab and failing, then they should go to prison to see if that helps.

Beating him over the head with a stick will not do any good because he is of legal age now. The best thing to do is let him continue on his downward spiral and the criminal justice system will take care of him. To him, he think he is smart, but, he doesn't realize there is no such thing as a smart criminal because if there were, he wouldn't get caught. He needs a real reality check, and if he continue to do what he is doing, jail time or hard prison time will give his a good dose of reality. At 18 years old, if he thinks he can't be sent to jail or prison for his willful actions, he is sorely mistaken. Once he goes to jail or prison to spend time with the real tough guys, that would be the reality check/wake up call for him because the guys in jail will turn him out and that's when he will wish he would have listened to you and others. Don't loose any more sleep over him because he is not willing to wise up, not yet, anyway.

I know how you feel. I am married to a drug addict that has been arrested numerous times and been to prison three times. She will be 39 in August and she is still using drugs. She went to court today for a new case, which got dismissed, and offered to bring her home and help her get treatment, after being gone 3 weeks this time, but would rather be somewhere else. Finally, I had to set my boundries for my own sake and told her if she wasn't in treatment by Friday, our marriage was over. We have been married for 5 years. When she isn't using drugs she is a good person to be around, but when she is using, she is someone else. For your own sake, and it's easier said than done, but we all must step back and wait for them to ask us for help. Until then, all we do is in vain.

Sounds like yr friend has a drug and alcohol problem. He needs to get treatment fo rthat and may get it in jail if he keeps going this way. Alcoholics and addicts need to "hit bottom" before they turn their lives around - I know, cuz I'm both. Took me a long time to smarten up but I've been clean and sober for seven years now. I hope he gets the help he needs.

Make him listen to " Higher" by James Blunt,"The Reason" by Hoobastank,"The Riddle"by Five for Fighting, and "It's Been Awhile" by Staind..
IF he likes those songs, there is no scare tactic to make him on the straight and narrow
