Try getting him a buzz cut, I've seen it done. It doesn't really look that bad.

Much Love!!

DO NOT shave the dog. As a former dog groomer and an Akita owner for almost 20 years, I can definitely tell you that that is a bad idea!! Although a husky's fur is thick, the two coats (undercoat and top coat) actually help to protect him from the sun's heat. Getting a kiddie pool is a great idea, as long as he'll go in it; and like the other person said, you'll need to keep the water fresh and clean it with Clorox once a week to stop algae. You don't say whether he stays inside during the heat of the day, but that is absolutely the number one thing you can do for him. Also, make sure to exercise early in the morning or later at night, out of the sun!! Let's face it...a dog like a husky (or an Akita) is going to be much more comfortable in the winter, but there are a lot of things you can do to make summers more bearable.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SHAVE HIM!!! Though it may seem like a good thing to do to make him comfortable, you could actually end up killing him. Your husky has 3 layers of fur. That bottom layer (usually the white coat) is thinner in summer and thicker in the winter. This is the coat that controls his body temperature.

Also, do not offer him ice. Especially not if he's been out in the heat all day long. Offering him ice could actually kill him too because you'll be cooling down his body temperature way too fast.

Your best options are to offer him some kind of dog house. I've seen them made out of bails of hay (or straw). This is a great insulation. Then put a fan blowing towards the opening of the make-shift dog house. The biggest problem with this though, is that it's a great way to grow bacteria (when it rains and the straw or hay begins to rot). Hay and straw are also good causes of allergy hot spots, especially in the heat.

You could also put a fan outside for him anyway. You can buy a big one at Walmart for 20 dollars. I have one for my Malamute and Mexican Grey Wolf-dog.

You can also get a plastic pool from walmart for anywhere from 6 to 15 dollars. These are great for them to lounge around in. The biggest problem with these is if set in the sun they will grow algae quickly and you'll need to change it regularly (to prevent mosquitos--they are born in water).

You could also consider a misting sprinkler. Even if it's not wetting your dog directly, it will cool the air down a few degrees--especially when the wind blows.

OK sweety, that's an easy one. The same way we do in Texas City, TX. Plenty of Air Conditioning, and give that baby a shave. Oh and try giving the baby Ice Cubes. My dogs love ice cubes on a hot day. You don't have to fill the water bowl with them, just one here or there when you get yourself a drink. Soon your pampered pooch will know the sound of the freezer door and be looking for a cube or two to cool down.

Try keeping the dog inside in the AC during the hottest part of the day. I am just about 60 miles out of San Antonio and man it is extremely hot here too, like 107 today! I leave my dogs inside in their kennels when I'm at work, and let them out when I get home. They usually stay outside all night, but about 10am when it hits 95 they are whining to come in. I think shaving the dog would be a bad idea, sunburn you know. If you cannot keep your dog inside, get one of those misting fans, they sell them at wal mart, and a real good insulated doghouse. Try to place the doghouse out of the direct sunlight, like under the porch or somewhere. Good luck!

A Siberian Husky let me live with him in Georgia. "Ivan" has a room with air conditioning and a fan. I don't leave him outside for a long time or exercise him in the heat of the day. I take him for short runs, early in the morning or late evening. I also give him lots of ice cubes. Keeping his undercoat thinned helps him a lot too.

I noticed breeders didn't recommend shaving. My neighbor at the beach had a Husky and the vet just shaved around her stomach area and back. She was a happy girl all summer. Just a note, having a Husky in southwest weather seems a bit odd.
