I'm not sure how one can be both subtle and obvious at the same time.
Regardless, you don't want to be subtle with a guy. Men are largely oblivious in these matters compared to women, so what you consider subtle he wouldn't notice, and what you might consider obvious he would regard as subtle.
Basically the best thing you can do is look as pretty as possible (yeah yeah, we're all beautiful inside, but guys are programmed to respond more to physical beauty than personality, we just are), talk to him a lot, and laugh at his jokes. Also, if you slap him lightly on the arm or give him a playful shove when he makes a joke, he'll get the message, and if he doesn't one of his friends will and point it out.

Look sister, most dudes are to thick 'tween the ears to catch on to subtle. Ya gotta just do wats all da ladys in Hollywood do. Kick him square in the after-deck and tell him... "Hey bonehead! I am cute and too good for you, but I go'n ta give ya a break and let you take me out tonight. So go clean yourself up & pick me up at 8PM SHARP!" Then just turn your back & strut away home & get ready, 'cuse he'll be there to pick you up a 7:55 PM. Trust me toots. It always works every time.

Guys don't really get subtle. We need a more direct approach. Just get him off to the side and just talk to him about it.

Smile, eye contact, light touches. C'mon. I've never met a woman who was not naturally good at this. Girls can be more forward because guys are horny fools. Go for it.

you can lightly brush against him, rest you hand on his arm or shoulder. do the side head-tilt and smile...(corny but effective) if all else fails just ask him, hey I was wondering what would you think if you and i...(go to a club, movie, bar, etc) pay attention to the answer. good luck. :)

These guys got the jist of it, i mean rub his arm with your elbow. Rub your leg up on his. Look at him with your big pretty eyes. C'mon you girls are usually great at this.

flash him? lol jks ... or just like touch him subtly, like lets say ur both sittin cross legged, rest ur elbow on his knee, u normally wouldnt do that but it will give him a hint ;)
