Dogs sniff for the scent of other dogs for territorial rights, and to cover the scent of their mates as well. I have a mating pair of Great Danes. My male will not go pee until after my female has gone. He will race out the door and run all over the yard like mad to find her spot. He will sit there and sniff it forever and start drooling. Then like the big-footed galoot that he is he will squat over that spot and mark it with his own, that tells all the other males in the neighborhood that is his woman and stay away. Then he will go pee on every bush in the yard. Don't worry about the five minutes. They are just making sure no other dog has been in their yard. If my female hasn't been out in hours my male will sniff every blade of grass in the yard to find any spots of hers that he may have missed earlier in the day. If you have a male he will search for any female scent and try and be the big dog by peeing over it as well be it belonging to his woman or not.

My dogs like to pee where the other dogs peed. If they sniff around for 5 minutes then they dont have to go very badly. I have two golden retrievers and they love to pee on firehydrants, absolutely their favorite.

They're trying to find where all the previous pee spots were, so they can pee in the same general area.

The better question is.. Why do dogs always go around sniffing a girl's *** and a guy's ****?

Dogs, especially male dogs like to mark their territoy. They sniff to let them know if another dog has frequented the area recently, and if so, they will relieve themselves as a means of remarking the tirritory.

They are looking for areas to go and Some do go and mark other dogs areas to show them that its their territory. But others will mark a spot near that area to show them that they are close by.

Its not 'peeing' but marking the territory.
Sniffing they get 'who' has passed (and peed) by there before,
and then they mark the place with their own urine.

They are looking for the best spot! You have a toilet, it is there right in front of you in an obvious place, but dogs, they have to locate theirs!

They are trying to find a good place to mark their territory.
