Jews do not believe that Jesus was the moshiach. Assuming that he existed, and assuming that the Christian scriptures are accurate in describing him (both matters that are debatable), he simply did not fulfill the mission of the moshiach. Jesus did not do any of the things that the scriptures said the messiah would do.
On the contrary, another Jew born about a century later came far closer to fulfilling the messianic ideal than Jesus did. His name was Shimeon ben Kosiba, known as Bar Kochba (son of a star), and he was a charismatic, brilliant, but brutal warlord. Rabbi Akiba, one of the greatest scholars in Jewish history, believed that Bar Kochba was the moshiach. Bar Kochba fought a war against the Roman Empire, catching the Tenth Legion by surprise and retaking Jerusalem. He resumed sacrifices at the site of the Temple and made plans to rebuild the Temple. He established a provisional government and began to issue coins in its name. This is what the Jewish people were looking for in a moshiach; Jesus clearly does not fit into this mold. Ultimately, however, the Roman Empire crushed his revolt and killed Bar Kochba. After his death, all acknowledged that he was not the moshiach.
Throughout Jewish history, there have been many people who have claimed to be the moshiach, or whose followers have claimed that they were the moshiach: Shimeon Bar Kochba, Shabbatai Tzvi, Jesus, and many others too numerous to name. Leo Rosten reports some very entertaining accounts under the heading False Messiahs in his book, The Joys of Yiddish. But all of these people died without fulfilling the mission of the moshiach; therefore, none of them were the moshiach. The moshiach and the Olam Ha-Ba lie in the future, not in the past.
Biblical Passages Referring to the Moshiach
The following passages in the Jewish scriptures are the ones that Jews consider to be messianic in nature or relating to the end of days. These are the ones that we rely upon in developing our messianic concept:
Isaiah 2, 11, 42; 59:20
Jeremiah 23, 30, 33; 48:47; 49:39
Ezekiel 38:16
Hosea 3:4-3:5
Micah 4
Zephaniah 3:9
Zechariah 14:9
Daniel 10:14
If you want to know how Jews interpret the passages that Christians consider to be messianic, see the Jews for Judaism website, especially the Knowledge Base under Resources. The Knowledge Base addresses more than 130 of the most common arguments that evangelists make to Jews.
Messianic Jews and Jews for Jesus are NOT Jews.

The Jews were expecting their Messiah to establish an earthly kingdom.
Not really wanting to look up the verse right now, but at the beginning of his ministry on earth, he is reading from the Old Testament (whatever it was called then) and quoting Isaiah, a prophecy about the Messiah. When he finishes quoting the passage, he concludes by saying "I tell you, this day in your hearing the scripture is fulfilled" (my paraphrase).
Of course, it caused a big stir, because they understood that he was claiming to be the fulfillment of this prophecy. But more stunningly, he stopped the quote in mid-sentence, before it went on to refer to the Messiah's earthly kingdom.
Jesus first came to earth to set up his Heavenly kingdom. He's coming back to set up his earthly one. But the Jews had always assumed the verse would be fulfilled simultaneously. So since Jesus was never going about trying to set up an earthly kingdom, in fact, preaching to "render unto Ceaser what is Ceaser's", they could not have been good Law-abiding Jews and believed that he was it.
However, some did understand his teachings and knew he was the Son of God. So some did believe. Just not the majority of the ruling class. That is why they are still looking for the Messiah today, because nobody has yet ascended to rule Israel with the ability to also claim to be the Messiah.
And it will never happen; it is mathematically practically impossible for one man to fulfill all the prophecies in the Old Testament regarding the Messiah, yet Jesus did. One day Jesus will come back, and Israel will recognize him at last.

I think they're great people and they are Jews who have turned to the lord Jesus Christ as a personal Savior and, of course, in the Old Testament, He is called Messiah, so they have the label of Messianic because they are looking for the coming of Messiah in the very near future. And that's what I’ve been talking about. This ridiculous thing called replacement theology where God is through with the Jews forever. That's not so.
The bible teaches in Romans chapters 9 to 11 the Jews past, chapter 9, the Jews present, chapter 10, and the Jews future, chapter 11. And when messiah comes, chapter 11, verse 26 says: “all Israel shall be saved, for there shall come out of Zion, out of Jerusalem a deliverer who shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob”.
Who is Jacob? Jacob changed his name to Israel, 2 Kings 17:34. And when Messiah comes, He opens their blinded eyes and all Judaism, all Israel comes to Jesus Christ. I'm for the messianic Jews.

There are many Jews, Messianic Jews, who believe that Jesus Christ is Lord.
But when Christ was crucified, they had corrupt priests, corrupt government officials, and all of those who were "in authority" were far too comfortable to accept what Jesus was teaching----to accept that each of them would have to put Jesus as King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and to put the benefit of others before their own. If they had admitted that Jesus was the Christ, then their whole way of life would be up-ended, their authority would be less, and they would have been asked to give away much of their riches to the poor.

People recieve orientations from many sourses. The Pharisees and the Sandhedren where covering their backside when they rejected Jesus the Messiah. They could not and would not except a suffering messiah on their behalf or anyone elses. It seems that political advantage overrules freedom of thought or expession. We do know that the Essenes of the day were much more on target and see clearer than anyone else.
No one anticipated a suffering Messiah, The Palm sunday celebration was for a victory messiah against the Romans

Jews do not accept Jesus as the messiah because according to them:
Jesus did not fulfill the messianic prophecies, Jesus did not embody the personal qualifications of the Messiah, Biblical verses "referring" to Jesus are mistranslations and Jewish belief is based on national revelation.

Jesus came to the Jews FIRST. But, they rejected Him, as God hardened their hearts - with the result being, Gentiles were able to become God's chosen people TOO! AWESOME GOD! So, the Jews are gonna have to wait until after the Christians are taken up (rapture, anyone?) to become born again. Check out the history of the 'chosen people of God'. Over and over, they obey, they disobey, they are punished, they cry, God forgives, restores, they disobey, ad infinitum!
