once you sign on, you belong to the military. they will find him. during wartime they can actually shoot them as its desertion. if he only got hard time in the military prisons for 25 years to life. once he is dishonorably discharged. it stayed with you for life. its rare to get a job with a dishonorable discharge, but desertion in the time of war. not only will he never get a job, but any other military guys find out, he may not live long, as they fought and he ran away. he's not a good friend if he runs. anyone that has knowledge or harbors him will get in as much trouble and then your life is over. the worst is to give up and take it like a man and maybe get a discharge under dishonorable conditions. you don't want desertion as the military has shot deserters in past wars and can still do it just by finding them and no due process.

If your buddy is already signed his life away to the government, than they wont necesarilly go after him, but if he gets a ticket or he pays utility bills, or anything else the government wil get ahold of they'll find him charge him as "AWOL" and he'll do a little time in a military jail, which i think is a lot better than county or state prison, but if he isn't fully enlisted yet hes not held to anything.

They will send the FBI after him, and when they find him they will take him to a military base and give him a dishonorable discharge. He is a coward and shouldn't have joined in the first place. This will follow him the rest of his life.

They don't shoot people for desertion anymore... but they can give him a dishonorable discharge in absentia. This will follow him for his whole life, affecting things like job applications and credit ratings. Why did he sign up in the first place?

I'm sure you are concerned about him, He will do some time on the brig. He should've never signed up if he didn't want to be in the military. Once you sign the papers the government owns you until you enlistment is up.

they'll find him. it may take a while, but it will. they'll either make him go or put him in the brig.
basic really isnt that bad. tell him to grow some balls. he raised his right hand on his own, nobody forced him to do it. now he has to follow through on his commitment.

Desertion is not the way to go. Unfortunately they don't execute for that anymore. He needs to grow up and accept responsibility.
