Fathers are overprotective sometimes as are other family members. No one would ever be good enough for their little girl. I was afraid to tell my father because he was very picky about who I dated and never liked any of them. They quickly see you are in love and see how well your partner treats you and they relax. If he doesn't relax maybe you should think why he feels that way!

Fathers love daughters and sometimes think that any guy is not good enough for their lovely daughter. Usually gradually the father will get to know the guy, and they may even become close if they find that they enjoy doing something like going to ball games or fishing or even playing poker together.

However, quite often either the mother-in-law or the father-in-law or both will never really like the guy although they may learn to put up with him. The real problem is when families really get divided, and people really start hating each other and forming groups. Then even the little kids in the family may get hurt accidentally in all the turmoil or even physical violence.

Personally, my mother-in-law was an angel, her husband, Don Guaro, respected me even though we had nothing in common.

Since I am North American living in Puerto Rico, and my wife is a Puerto Rican with a doctorate in education from a small farm, we sometimes have some severe problems, since our backgrounds and upbringing have been very different; and other people have done some cruel things to me.

In life no one lives without some problems so you have to deal with the problems you have and try to find a way to help everyone to live in harmony if possible or if people really can't get along, then you have to arrange it so the enemies don't go to the same places or at least stay somewhat apart so that they don't ruin the dinner or party or whatever.

I havent told anyone, and we've been engaged for nearly 4 months. At first I was super excited about it, but then I had my doubts. I know he is the one, so I riding the rough patches. Hopefully we can get out and tell everyone, or maybe we'll just elope, and have a reception afterwards!

I am very open about telling my family that I'm engaged. If they have a problem with it, the problem is theirs and not mine and not my fiance's. I absolutely refuse to let my family come between us and our plans.
