Because Abraham took the time to develop an interest and friendship with God. God then proceeded to "Bless" him and his generations of grandchildren by seperating them and giving them a promised land. Of course his grandchildren did not always have the same feelings down through the ages as he did about God. But because God is loyal to him he promised that the earth would be blessed by one of his seed, or a genetic heir. Jesus filled this role and ancient Hebrews could have accepted him but chose not to. So they are no longer the chosen people of god any more than the rest of mankind and have the same opportunity to gain life that anyone else has.

God bless hebrews with prophets and miracles that save them from grieves, such as pharaoh's threat and many more. God also give them advantage over other race in the world such as their bright mind. Eventually they felt that they are the chosen people of God.
But in the other hand, they ignored God's command and try and even killed their prophets including Jesus. They learned about the last prophet mentioned in Bible and Torah. But to their disappointment, the last prophet showed up in the land of Arab. That's why jews hate moslems.
In short, they are surely blessed until now, but the chosen part is their own assumption.

I dont know why God chose the Jews as His chosen people. Only God knows why He does some things. I know He chose Mary.. who was a Jew because of several reasons.
